Background: This study delves into the transformative potential of Real-Time Visibility (RTV) in global manufacturing supply chains, building upon existing research to explore its impact on operational efficiency and sustainability. It addresses key challenges in implementing RTV, such as trust issues, technological barriers, and data accuracy. The research is anchored around two main questions: identifying specific improvements in supply chain efficiency attributable to RTV and understanding how RTV catalyzes operational enhancements in global manufacturing supply chains. Methods: Our study employs the Action Learning Research (ALR) methodology to examine supply chain visibility, addressing the limitations of the Resource-Based View (RBV) as identified by existing literature. Through qualitative thematic analysis of the discussions, our research uncovers patterns and insights into supply chain visibility dynamics, contributing to academic and practical discourse. Our methodology unfolds in five cycles, each exploring different facets of supply chain visibility. This comprehensive approach bridges a significant gap in the literature and ensures our findings are grounded in the real-world complexities of modern supply chains. Results: The study presents findings from a case study involving the integration of Real-Time Transportation Visibility Platform (RVTP) with a global manufacturer’s Transportation Management System (TMS). Key results include notable improvements in operational efficiency, cost reduction, and enhanced sustainability. These improvements manifest as heightened accuracy in Estimated Time of Arrivals (ETAs), more streamlined operational workflows, reduced lead times, substantial cost savings in demurrage and detention, and improved customer communication. The research also identifies the broader impacts of RTV on supply chain operations, such as the development of advanced visual tracking systems for better stakeholder management. Conclusions: The study concludes that RTV transcends being a mere technological advancement and emerges as a strategic imperative in modern supply chain management. It underscores the necessity of strategic planning and resource allocation for sustainable growth and operational efficiency. The findings affirm RTV's crucial role in fostering efficient operational practices and enhancing data quality, resilience, and risk management capabilities. The research suggests future directions for exploring RTV implementation across various industries and supply chain models, reinforcing RTV's importance as a foundation for efficient, resilient, and sustainable supply chain operations.
