Arabic vocabulary in the multilingual dictionary of Franciszek Mesgnien-Meniński ("Thesaurus Linguarum Orientalium..." 1680)

Niniejsza praca magisterska jest poświęcona słownikowi wielojęzycznemu Franciszka Mesgniena-Menińskiego pt. „Thesaurus Linguarum Orientalium…” (1680). Jej celem jest odtworzenie biografii językowej leksykografa, analiza metaleksykograficzna jego pracy oraz zbadanie ekwiwalencji semantycznej w językach: arabskim, francuskim i polskim na podstawie wybranych artykułów hasłowych. Podjęto również próbę oceny poziomu opanowania języka arabskiego przez autora słownika. Pierwszy rozdział pracy skupia się na życiorysie Franciszka Mesgniena-Menińskiego, w tym jego biografii językowej. Przedmiotem rozdziału drugiego jest „Thesaurus Linguarum Orientalium…”; omówiono tu szczegółowo jego mikro- i makrostrukturę, a także wstęp do słownika. W rozdziale trzecim znajduje się analiza semantyczna wybranych artykułów hasłowych, oparta metodologicznie na badaniach europejskich słowników wielojęzycznych z okresu XVI-XVIII wieku. Zakończeniem pracy jest przedstawienie wniosków płynących z analiz oraz wskazówki dotyczące możliwości przeprowadzenia dalszych badań nad tym słownikiem w nurcie arabistycznym.

The below dissertation revolves around the multilingual dictionary of Franciszek Mesgnien-Meninski entitled "Thesaurus Linguarum Orientalium..." (1680). The purpose of the work is to recreate the linguistic biography of the lexicographer, to conduct a metalexicographical analysis of his work, and to explore the semantic equivalence in three languages - Arabic, French, and Polish - on the basis of the selected keywords. The dissertation also contains an attempt of evaluating the dictionary’s author’s level of comprehension of Arabic. The first chapter of the paper is devoted to a biography of Mesgnien-Meninski, encompassing his linguistic biography. The topic of the second chapter is the "Thesaurus Linguarum Orientalium... " - a detailed analysis of its micro and macro structure is conducted, as well as of the introduction to said dictionary. The third chapter involves a semantic analysis of the chosen keywords methodologically based on studies of European multilingual dictionaries from the period between XVI and XVIII century.In the conclusion of the dissertation one will find a layout of the various conclusions based on the analyses as well as some guidelines regarding further studies of the dictionary in question in the branch of Arabic Studies.
