FEMALE VIOLENCE IN TONI MORRISON'S "SULA" - AN INTERSECTIONAL PERSPECTIVE

W niniejszej pracy podejmuję problem kobiecej przemocy w Suli Toni Morrison. Korzystając z analizy treści oraz przyjmując perspektywę intersekcjonalną autorstwa Kimberlé Crenshaw, koncentruję się na eksploracji i identyfikacji źródeł postaw kobiet w Suli, która to powieść stanowi podstawę analizy. Istotnym elementem pracy są kwestie definicyjne, a także próba zarysu kontekstu literackiego w obrębie literatury afrykańskiej, afroamerykańskiej i postkolonialnej ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem twórczości Toni Morrison. Rozważania i wnioski z pracy sugerują, że analizowane przejawy przemocy wśród bohaterek Suli mają swoje źródła w wielowymiarowych i nakładających się na siebie formach rasizmu, seksizmu, wykluczenia społecznego i patriarchalnych struktur. Formy te są powiązane w strukturalny ucisk, a reakcją na niego jest m.in przemoc, będąca formą eskapizmu i reakcją na niesprawiedliwość. Perspektywa intersekcjonalna wydaje się zatem niezbędna w analizowaniu zagadnień społecznych, jako że rodzaje opresji wynikające z rasy, pozycji w strukturze klasowej czy płci społecznej nie mogą być redukowane i wyjaśniane w oddzieleniu od innych., Analiza Suli pozwala także wskazać na istotną rolę i funkcję literatury jako możliwego transmitera krytyki warunków życia i problemów z tego wynikających, szczególnie w kontekście grup mniejszościowych i uciskanych.

In this paper, I address the issue of female violence in Sula by Toni Morrison. Using content analysis and adopting the intersectional perspective developed by Kimberlé Crenshaw, I focus on exploring and identifying the sources of the women's attitudes in Sula, which serves as the basis for the analysis. An essential element of the work involves definitional issues, as well as an attempt to outline the literary context within African, African American, and postcolonial literature, with particular emphasis on the works of Toni Morrison. The reflections and conclusions of the paper suggest that the manifestations of violence among the female characters in Sula originate from multidimensional and overlapping forms of racism, sexism, social exclusion, and patriarchal structures. These forms are linked in a structural oppression, and one response to it is violence, which serves as a form of escapism and a reaction to injustice. Thus, the intersectional perspective seems indispensable in analyzing social issues, as forms of oppression related to race, class position, or gender cannot be reduced and explained in isolation from one another. The analysis of Sula also highlights the significant role and function of literature as a potential transmitter of criticism regarding living conditions and the problems arising from them, particularly in the context of minority and oppressed groups.
