Heroism, Christianity and humour in “Fóstbræðra saga” and “Njáls saga”.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza powiązania motywów heroizmu, chrześcijaństwa i humoru w dwóch sagach o Islandczykach: „Fóstbræðra saga” i „Sadze o Njalu”. Sagi różnią się od siebie pod kilkoma kluczowymi względami, co pozwala na dobre uwypuklenie owych trzech przenikających się motywów.Pracę otwiera opis wykorzystanej podczas analizy metody badawczej, której podstawą są narratologia i hermeneutyka. Następnie szczegółowo zostaje nakreślony każdy z badanych motywów, wraz z wyjaśnieniem ich znaczenia i wpływu na fabułę sag, z podaniem kluczowych dla analizy wyznaczników.W drugiej części pracy następuje omówienie treści sag – w części poświęconej „Fóstbræðra saga” podkreślony jest nietypowy styl narracji oraz sposób przedstawienia motywów heroizmu, chrześcijaństwa i humoru, uzewnętrzniający się w opisie tytułowych „braci sprzysiężonych”, Thorgeira i Thormoda. W części poświęconej „Sadze o Njalu” uwaga skupia się na kilku bohaterach: Gunnarze, Skarphedinie, Njalu i Flosim, w celu zarysowania funkcji humoru w sadze.Analiza ta pozwoliła zbadać i scharakteryzować sposób łączenia się motywów heroizmu, chrześcijaństwa i humoru w obu dziełach.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the interrelationship of the themes of heroism, Christianity and humour in two sagas of Icelanders: “Fóstbræðra saga” and “Njáls saga”. The sagas differ from each other in several key respects, which allows for a thorough examination of these three motifs.I begin by describing the research method used, which is based on narratology and hermeneutics. I then outline each of the motifs studied in detail, explaining their significance and influence on the plot of the sagas, as well as giving the determinants that guided my analysis.Next, I discuss the content of the sagas. In the section on the “Fóstbræðra saga”, I focus on the unusual narrative style and how the three motifs are presented, describing the title brothers of the saga, Thorgeir and Thormod. In the section on the “Njáls saga”, I concentrate on several characters, exploring the function of humour in the saga.This analysis allowed for an exploration and characterization of how the themes of heroism, Christianity and humour combine in both sagas.
