Culture in Translation: Rendering Extralinguistic Cultural References in Professional and Fan Subtitles of The West Wing

master
Extralinguistic Cultural References (ECRs) can be broadly defined as “references to places, people, institutions, customs, food etc. that you may not know even if you know the language in question” (Pedersen, 2011: 44), which makes them a particular challenge in translation. In texts, they may serve a variety of functions: they can be essential for understanding, act as triggers of humor, or simply add local flavor. The present thesis analyzes the rendition of monocultural ECRs in the Polish professional and fan-created subtitles of episodes 1, 3, 5, and 7 of the first season of the American political drama The West Wing. The analysis shows that both translators employed the full range of ECR rendition strategies as identified by Pedersen (2011), yet with divergent orientations: the professional subtitler leaned toward the target-oriented approach, while the fansubber favored the source-oriented one. This divergence is most evident in their preferred strategies: the professional subtitler primarily relied on Omission, whereas the fansubber favored Retention. These choices suggest differing assumptions about the audience: the fansub presumes familiarity with American culture, while the professional translation anticipates the need for greater intervention.pl
Niniejsza praca analizuje przekład monokulturowych ECR w polskich napisach profesjonalnych i fanowskich do odcinków 1, 3, 5 i 7 pierwszego sezonu amerykańskiego serialu politycznego „The West Wing” (pl. Prezydencki Poker). Retention). Wybory te wskazują na odmienne założenia dotyczące odbiorców: fan zakłada ich znajomość kultury amerykańskiej, natomiast profesjonalny tłumacz uwzględnia potrzebę szerszej interwencji translatorskiej.pl
