Numerical abilities of fish and marine mammals

Zdolności numeryczne, takie jak umiejętność wyboru bardziej licznej spośród podanych grup lub możliwość policzenia ilości obiektów w nich, wydają się być kompetencją nabytą na drodze postępującej edukacji. Szereg badań empirycznych prowadzonych na zwierzętach innych niż ludzie sugeruje jednak, że elementarne zdolności numeryczne są wrodzone. Szczególnie interesujące w tej dziedzinie są organizmy wodne, ze względu na środowisko życia zupełnie odmienne od naszego. Celem pracy, jest dokonanie przeglądu oraz podsumowanie istniejących już modeli teoretycznych i badań empirycznych przeprowadzonych na rybach i ssakach morskich.

Numerical abilities, such as the skill to select a larger group from among the given ones, or the ability to count the number of objects in them, seem to be a competence acquired through education. However, a number of empirical studies in non-human animals suggest that some of the mentioned abilities may be innate. Creatures living under water seem to be of particular interest in this area because of their environment, which is completely different from ours. The aim of this work is to review and summarize the already existing theoretical models and the empirical research carried out on fish and marine mammals.
