Ivan Paskevich, the Viceroy of Congress Poland in the Polish Memoirs

Praca magisterska zatytułowana Postać namiestnika Królestwa Polskiego Iwana Paskiewicza w polskiej literaturze pamiętnikarskiej skupia w sobie przegląd, analizę i interpretację relacji oraz wspomnień Polaków pamiętających rządy rosyjskiego namiestnika.Praca składa się z pięciu rozdziałów. W rozdziale I przedstawiłem koleje losu Iwana Paskiewicza w oparciu o znane opracowania, głównie monografię pióra A.P. Szczerbatowa. Rozdział II poświęciłem omówieniu zebranych wspomnień oraz charakterystyce pamiętnikarzy. Tamże, na wybranym przykładzie powtarzającej się we wspomnieniach anegdoty chciałem pokazać wpływ, jaki mogła wywrzeć na przekaz pamiętnikarski literatura romantyczna. W rozdziale III umieściłem wspomnienia o Paskiewiczu jako wojskowym. Trzonem mojej pracy są rozdziały IV i V. W pierwszym z nich chciałem pokazać dotknięte najmocniej ideologią romantyzmu stereotypowe przedstawienia Paskiewicza przez Polaków w życiu politycznym Królestwa Polskiego. W drugim natomiast, chciałem pokazać życie codzienne namiestnika, bliżej przyjrzeć się jego zachowaniu, upodobaniom i charakterowi, odkrywając w nim tym samym zwykłego człowieka, a nie groźnego polityka – przedstawiciela zaborczej władzy. W ciągu całej pracy zadawałem sobie kilka pytań: Kim był Paskiewicz w oczach Polaków? Czy polscy pamiętnikarze odbierali jego postać jednoznacznie? Jeżeli potępiali jego osobę to dlaczego?Analiza polskich wspomnień pokazała, że ich treść została zapisana pod wrażeniem lektur literatury romantycznej. Za jej pośrednictwem zarówno działacze emigracyjni, jak i mieszkańcy zaboru rosyjskiego ujemnie patrzyli na postać Paskiewicza. Opinia ta miała charakter masowy, lecz nie jednoznaczny. Nieliczni współcześni, którzy bliżej poznali rosyjskiego namiestnika i pozostawili wzmianki o nim – nie przedstawili go w wyraźnie negatywnym świetle.Przeważające negatywne osądy Polaków stworzyły mit „strasznego Paskiewicza”. Zdominował on polską opinię publiczną i przyćmił drugą stronę – życie codzienne i prywatne namiestnika. Zbierając i przedstawiając wspomnienia dotyczące tej drugiej sfery mogłem podjąć próbę przedstawienia charakteru i zainteresowań rosyjskiego zarządcy.

The thesis titled Ivan Paskevich, the Viceroy of Congress Poland in the Polish Memoirs is focused on review, analysis and interpretation of the memories of the Polish people who still remembered the rule of the Russian Viceroy.The work consists of five chapters. The first chapter deals with the biography of Ivan Paskevich, which is based on the historical studies, mainly the monograph of A.P. Shcherbatov. The second chapter is devoted to description of the assembled memoirs as well as the characteristic of the diary keepers. It also attempts to show the influence of the romantic literature on the message of the memoirs, basing on the example of the anecdote recurring in those memoirs. The chapter number three tells the story of Paskevich as a military. The foundation of my thesis constitute the chapters IV and V. The former includes the stereotypical renditions of Paskevich the most strongly motivated by the romantic ideology. The renditions were made by the Polish people and they tried to show the political life of the Kingdom of Poland. The latter deals with the Viceroy’s everyday life, attempts to give an insight into Paskevich’s behaviour, inclinations and his character, discovering in him a sheer man, and not a fearful politician – a representative of the tsar’s rule. Throughout the work, certain questions are posed: who was Paskevich in the eyes of Poles? Did the Polish diary keepers perceive him in the same way? If they condemned his person – why did they do so?The analysis of the Polish memoirs proved that they were written under the influence of the romantic literature. On the basis of such literature the emigration activists as well as the inhabitants of the Russian partition looked at Paskevich negatively. This kind of opinion prevailed, however it was not the only one. Few contemporaries that had the opportunity to meet the Russian Viceroy personally and left memoirs about his person did not render him as a total villain. The prevailing negative assumptions of the Polish people created the myth of “Paskevich the fearful.” It dominated the Polish public opinion and eclipsed the other side of the medal – the everyday and private lives of the Viceroy. Thanks to collecting and analysing the memories concerning the other sphere of his life, it was possible to take an attempt to present his character and inclinations.
