The story of one library : the resources, offerings and information services of the Catholic University Library of Leuven

Cel/Teza: Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie historii, zasobów, oferty oraz usług informacyjnych świadczonych przez bibliotekę najstarszego katolickiego uniwersytetu w Belgii – Katolickiego Uniwersytetu w Leuven. Koncepcja/Metodyka badań: Artykuł opiera się na metodzie analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa oraz własnych doświadczeniach z wizyty w Bibliotece Katolickiego Uniwersytetu w Leuven. Materiały stanowiące bazę przeprowadzonej kwerendy pozyskano za pośrednictwem serwisu internetowego biblioteki oraz tradycyjnych i elektronicznych źródeł informacji. Kolejno wszystkie materiały zostały uporządkowane, poddane analizie i selekcji celem wyłonienia kluczowych danych w aspekcie poruszanego tematu. Wyniki i wnioski: Biblioteka Katolickiego Uniwersytetu w Leuven posiada rozbudowaną ofertę zasobów i usług informacyjnych oraz stanowi centralny punkt informacyjny uczelni. Dostarcza zróżnicowane usługi, podnosząc kompetencje informacyjne środowiska akademickiego Leuven. Ograniczenia badań: Artykuł bazuje na analizie zasobów oraz usług wyłącznie jednej biblioteki akademickiej, stanowi wprowadzenie do dalszych badań. Oryginalność/Wartość poznawcza: Historia oraz oferta usług świadczonych przez Bibliotekę Katolickiego Uniwersytetu w Leuven może stanowić bodziec do dalszych badań i analiz nad rolą bibliotek akademickich w rozwoju środowiska informacyjnego.

Purpose/Thesis: The aim of this article is to present the history, resources, offerings and information services provided by the library of the oldest Catholic university in Belgium, the Catholic University of Leuven. Approach/Methods: The article is based on a method of analysis and criticism of the literature and on my own experience of visiting the Catholic University Library of Leuven. The materials that formed the basis of the search were obtained through the library’s website and traditional and electronic information sources. All collected materials were organised, analysed and selected in order to identify most relevant data in terms of the topic. Results and Conclusions: The Catholic University Library of Leuven has an extensive range of information resources and services and is the central information point of the university. It provides a variety of services to enhance the information competences of Leuven’s academic community. Research Limitations: The article is based on an analysis of the resources and services of only one academic library, and provides an introduction to further research. Originality/Value: The history and range of services provided by the Catholic University Library of Leuven can stimulate further research and analysis on the role of academic libraries in the development of the information environment.
