Image of prostitute in Naguib Mahfouz's novel "Midakk Alley"

Niniejsza praca ma na celu analizę szeroko pojętego obrazu prostytutki w literaturze arabskiej oraz skonfrontowanie go z wizją przedstawienia tej postaci przez Nağība Maḥfūẓa w powieści Zuqāq al – Midaqq (Hamida z Zaułka Midakk) z uwzględnieniem kontekstu kulturowego i polityczno-historycznego Bliskiego Wschodu. Odmienne sposoby ukazania prostytutki zaobserwować możemy zarówno zestawiając ze sobą dzieła pisarzy i pisarek arabskich, jak i autorów tej samej płci, a nawet w prozie jednego i tego samego autora.

This paper aims to analyze the broadly understood image of a prostitute in Arabic literature and to confront it with the vision of presenting this character by Naguib Mahfouz in the novel "Midakk Alley", taking into account the cultural, political and historical context of the Middle East. Different ways of showing a prostitute can be observed both by juxtaposing works of male and female Arab writers as well as by authors of the same sex, and even in the works of one and the same author.
