Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza i porównanie powieści Giovanniego Vergi „Rodzina Malavogliów” oraz jej adaptacji filmowej „Ziemia drży” w reżyserii Luchino Viscontiego, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem sposobu przedstawienia rzeczywistości sycylijskich rybaków. Dzieła są porównane w oparciu o teorię adaptacji filmowej oraz przy użyciu metody komparatystycznej. Praca składa się z czterech rozdziałów. Pierwszy z nich dotyczy teorii adaptacji filmowej i technik stosowanych w trakcie interpretacji dzieła literackiego za pomocą języka filmu. Drugi rozdział koncentruje się na Giovannim Verdze jako przedstawicielu weryzmu w literaturze włoskiej, natomiast trzeci rozdział jest poświęcony Luchino Viscontiemu i jego związkom z kinem neorealistycznym. Czwarty rozdział stanowi porównanie utworów na podstawie wcześniej zaprezentowanych informacji. Wskazane zostają podstawowe różnice między powieścią i jej adaptacją oraz związki obu dzieł z kontekstem historycznym i społecznym ich powstania.

The purpose of the thesis is to analyze and compare the novel “I Malavoglia” by Giovanni Verga and its film adaptation “The Earth Trembles” by Luchino Visconti, with particular emphasis on the way of portraying the reality of Sicilian fishermen. The works are compared based on the theory of film adaptation and with the use of comparative method. The thesis consists of four chapters. The first one concerns the theory of film adaptation and the techniques used to interpret literary work through the language of film. The second chapter focuses on Giovanni Verga as a representative of verismo in Italian literature, while the third chapter is dedicated to Luchino Visconti and his ties to neorealist cinema. The fourth chapter constitutes a comparison between the works using previously presented information. It specifies the main differences between the novel and its adaptation, as well as the connection between both pieces and the historical and social context of their creation.

Lo scopo di questa tesi è quello di analizzare e paragonare il romanzo “I Malavoglia” di Giovanni Verga e il suo adattamento cinematografico “La terra trema” di Luchino Visconti, con particolare attenzione alla modalità di presentazione della realtà dei pescatori siciliani. Le opere vengono confrontate in base alla teoria dell’adattamento cinematografico mediante il metodo comparativo. La tesi è composta da quattro capitoli. Il primo riguarda la teoria dell’adattamento cinematografico e le tecniche utilizzate per interpretare un’opera letteraria tramite linguaggio cinematografico. Il secondo capitolo è incentrato su Giovanni Verga come un rappresentante del verismo nella letteratura italiana, mentre il terzo capitolo è dedicato a Luchino Visconti e i suoi legami con il cinema neorealista. Il quarto capitolo costituisce un confronto tra le opere sulla base delle informazioni prima presentate. Vengono indicate le differenze fondamentali tra il romanzo e il suo adattamento e i rapporti delle opere con il contesto storico e sociale della loro creazione.
