The hammer, sickle and crescent. Analysis of Turkish reportages from USSR

Praca analizuje treść oraz formę dwóch reportaży tureckich autorów, którzy w połowie lat sześćdziesiątych odwiedzili Związek Socjalistycznych Republik Radzieckich: Sovyet Rusya, Azerbeycan, Özbekistan, Bulgaristan, Macaristan Meliha Cevdeta Andaya i Uzak Komşu Rusya’dan Gezi Notları İlhana Selçuka. W tekście przedstawiony zostaje problem reportażu literackiego jako gatunku o płynnych, niezdefiniowanych granicach, krótkie biografie obu pisarzy oraz szeroko zarysowane tło historyczne, obejmujące między innymi sytuację geopolityczną w Turcji, ZSRR, Stanach Zjednoczonych i Zachodniej Europie oraz prokomunistyczne tendencje wśród inteligencji tureckiej. Główna część pracy prezentuje społeczne, polityczne i kulturowe problemy, zaobserwowane przez autorów w trakcie swoich wyjazdów, takie jak kwestia udział kobiet na rynku pracy, funkcjonowanie gospodarki centralnie planowanej czy zagadnienie kolonialnego traktowania narodów tureckich wewnątrz Związku Radzieckiego. Końcowy rozdział stanowi próbę analizy formy i treści obu książek oraz odpowiedź na pytanie, na ile można je uznać za przykłady rzetelnego, bezstronnego reportażu.

This dissertation analyses the contents and the form of two reportages by Turkish authors, who visited the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in the middle of 1960s: Melih Cevdet Anday’s Sovyet Rusya, Azerbeycan, Özbekistan, Bulgaristan, Macaristan and İlhan Selçuk’s Uzak Komşu Rusya’dan Gezi Notları. The question of literary reportage as a genre with vague, undefined specifics, both writers’ short biographies, as well as broadly shown historical background, including geopolitical reality of Turkey, USSR, United States and Western Europe and pro-communist tendencies amongs Turkish inteligence, are all presented in the text. The main part of the dissertation presents social, political and cultural issues, noticed by both authors during their travels, such as the question of women’s share in the workforce, the functioning of central planned economy, or the problem of colonial treatment towards Turkic nations within Soviet Union. The final chapter tries to analyse form and contents of both books, while answering the question whether they could be seen as honest, unbiased examples of reportage.
