Reception of medieval and gothic themes in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century

W artykule poruszam zagadnienia związane z zainteresowaniem w romantyzmie epoką średniowiecza i stylem gotyckim, co miało swój wyraz w tzw. gothic revival, który początkowo objawił się w literaturze, po czym zagościł w innych dziedzinach, jak architektura, malarstwo, a nawet sztuka ogrodowa. Nawiązanie do owego stylu posiadało przyczyny zarówno estetyczne, jak i ideologiczne, miało za zadanie wsparcie moralne dla pokolenia stojącego w obliczu upadku dawnych wartości oraz przypomnienie czasów świetności państw. Nobilitacja średniowiecza obecna była w licznych manifestach przedstawicieli romantyzmu (Coleridge, Chateaubriand, Hugo, Wackenroder i Novalis), którzy upatrywali wpływu środowiska i klimatu na powstanie stylu, nawiązując jednocześnie do ważnych dla romantyków kategorii, jak wzniosłość i malowniczość. Ważnymi symbolami architektonicznymi w tym czasie były katedra gotycka, łącząca wartości stylowe i etyczne oraz ruina, przypominająca o świetności wieków minionych, będąca przykładem stapiania się dzieł człowieka i natury.

The article discusses about the issues related to Romantic interests of the Middle Ages and Gothic style, which was result in the gothic revival, which originally appeared in the literature, then in the another fields, such as architecture, painting, and even the art of gardening. The reference to the style had both aesthetic and ideological causes, like moral support for the generation faced with the collapse of the former values and a reminder heyday countries. Ennoblement of the Middle Ages was present in numerous manifestos representatives of Romanticism (Coleridge, Chateaubriand, Hugo, Wackenroder and Novalis), who have seen the impact of environmental and climate for style uprising, referring also important for romantics category as the sublime and picturesque at the same time. Important architectural symbols were the Gothic cathedral, which merges stylish and ethical values and ruin, reminiscent of the splendor of past centuries, which is an example of fusing of the works of man and nature.
