Niniejsza praca stanowi analizę sposobu w jaki Marco Polo przedstawia niezwykłych ludzi zamieszkujących Indie w Livre d’Ynde, czyli ostatniej księdze Devisement du monde. Ukazuje ona jak autor opisuje innych, odmiennych z perspektywy zachodu, próbując odpowiedzieć na pytanie czy portretowi temu bliżej jest do kategorii merveille (cudowności) czy do antropologii. Poprzez analizę opisów monstrualnych stworzeń, bada pojęcie potworności i użycie słowa merveille w utworze, aby zaobserwować jak autor redukuje listę kreatur, mających rzekomo zamieszkiwać odległe krainy, oraz w jaki sposób je normalizuje. Praca przedstawia teorię livres de référence (książek stanowiących punkt odniesienia), zgodnie z którą podróżnik interpretuje świat przez pryzmat znanych mu dzieł, nakładając na niego filtr swojej tradycji kulturowej, która sugeruje mu, co powinien zobaczyć, czego może się spodziewać w odległych krainach. Z tego względu, omawia również po krótce jak antyczna tradycja literacka opowiadała o cudach Orientu. Pierwszy rozdział stanowi biografia Marco Polo i prezentacja jego dzieła. Kolejne części analizują sposób w jaki podróżnik przedstawia niezwykłych mieszkańców Indii, dzieląc ich na dwie grupy: wyróżniających się ze względu na wygląd oraz tych, których potworność wynika ze sposobu zachowania, bądź zwyczajów dotyczących sposobu odżywiania (kanibalizm, spożywanie „nieczystego” mięsa), nagości i seksualności.

The aim of this thesis is to study the image of extraordinary people in Livre d’Ynde - the final volume of Devisement du monde by Marco Polo. It analyses how the author describes the Others, defined like this, due to their difference compering to the people from Western world, trying to answer the question if his narrative is closer to the category of merveille (wonder) or to anthropology. Upon the descriptions of different monstrous beings, it studies the idea of monstrosity and in which context the term merveille is used in the book, to observe how the author reduce the list of strange creatures, supposed to live in faraway countries, as well as how he normalizes them. It includes the theory of the « background books », according to which, one travels always with a previous notion of the world, meaning a cultural tradition suggesting what he is supposed to discover. The author perceives Asia influenced by the legends and stories about exotic countries, this is why this thesis includes also a short presentation of the Ancient literary tradition speaking of the wonders of the Orient. The first chapter of this paper is a biography of Marco Polo and a presentation of his book. Following parts examine how he describes the extraordinary people from India, by classifying them into two groups: in first, the monstrosity concerns their physical appearance, in the other, the bestiality lies primarily in their lifestyle or habits concerning alimentation (cannibalism and the consumption of « unclean » meats), nudity and sexuality.

L’intention du présent mémoire est d’analyser l’image des peuples extraordinaires présentée dans le dernier volume du Devisement du monde de Marco Polo, c’est-à-dire dans le Livre d’Ynde. Cette analyse examine comment l’auteur dépeint les autres, perçus comme tels à cause de leur différence par rapport aux Occidentaux, pour essayer de répondre à la question qui est celle de savoir si son récit se penche plutôt vers l’anthropologie ou vers la merveille. A partir des descriptions des différents êtres monstrueux, elle étudie l’idée de la monstruosité et l’emploi du mot merveille dans le livre pour observer comment l’auteur réduit la liste des créatures étranges supposées d’habiter des pays lointains et comment il les normalise. La théorie des « livres de référence », selon laquelle le voyageur porte toujours avec soi une vision préétablie du monde de son tradition culturelle, ainsi qu’une analyse brève de la tradition littéraire antique parlant des merveilles de l’Orient, sont également présentées. En effet, le voyageur découvre l’Asie à travers sa connaissance antérieure qui lui suggère ce qu’il devrait trouver là-bas. Le premier chapitre propose la biographie de Marco Polo et la présentation de son œuvre. Les parties suivantes examinent comment l’auteur décrit des peuples extraordinaires, en les classifiant en deux groupes : le premier, concerne la monstruosité au niveau de l’apparence physique, tandis que dans l’autre la bestialité réside avant tout dans le mode de vie ou dans des coutumes sauvages qui concernent notamment l’alimentation (le cannibalisme et la consommation de viandes impures), la nudité et la sexualité.
