Prewar attempts to rescue the project of modernity

Celem pracy jest ukazanie przedwojennych propozycji przeformułowania problemu racjonalności dokonanych przez H. Plessnera i E. Husserla w świetle rozpoznań M. Horkheimera i T. Adorno z Dialektyki oświecenia. Głosy Plessnera i Husserla brzmią jak swoista antycypacja oskarżeń, które już po wojnie padną w kierunku nowoczesności i filozofii jako współodpowiedzialnej za doprowadzenie projektu oświecenia do aberracji. Równocześnie jednak niezwykle mocny jest w nich apel ponownego przemyślenia kultury w kategoriach etycznego obowiązku i skierowania jej na nowe tory szerzej rozumianej racjonalności. W perspektywie diagnozy europejskiego projektu oświeceniowego, jaką przynosi opus magnum Adorna i Horkheimera, te dwie przedwojenne propozycje wydają się zaskakująco nowatorskimi próbami ratowania projektu nowoczesnego i człowieka pojętego jako animal rationale.

Thesis is an attempt to compare prewar reformulations of the problem of rationality made by H. Plessner and E. Husserl with diagnosis made by Horkheimer and Adorno in Dialectic of Enlightenment. Voices of Plessner and Husserl sound like an anticipation of postwar accusations against modernity and philosophy as responsible for aberration of project of Enlightenment. But there is also strong appeal to rethink culture as ethical obligation and to subject it to a wider rationality. Confronted with diagnosis of Enlightenment suggested by Frankfurt School philosophers those two prewar propositions seem to be surprisingly innovative attempts to rescue modern project and human as animal rationale.
