Creating a place’s identity : on the example of Jerzy Grotowski and ZAR Theatre’s Brzezinka

Poprzez analizę przemian tożsamości bazy leśnej w Brzezince Instytutu im. Jerzego Grotowskiego we Wrocławiu, opisywanych jako retelling, autorka próbuje wskazać w jaki sposób wpływa on na odbiór wydarzeń, które mają w nim miejsce. Przede wszystkim przywołuje działania parateatralne Grotowskiego, spektakl "Ewangelie dzieciństwa" Teatru ZAR oraz koncert z okazji piętnastolecia premiery tego spektaklu. Odwołując się do koncepcji semiotycznego-symbolicznego Julii Kristevej oraz miejsca pamięci Pierre’a Nory, autorka przekonuje, że nadawanie miejscu znaczeń symbolicznych związane jest z doświadczeniem ciała artysty, uczestnika czy odbiorcy wydarzeń.

While analyzing identity transformation of Grotowski Institute’s forest base in Brzezinka, described as a retelling, the author tries to indicate how it influences the reception of events that take place in it. Mainly, she recalls Grotowski’s paratheatrical activities, ZAR Theater’s performance: "Gospels of Childhood", and a concert on the occasion of the fifteenth anniversary of the premiere of this performance. Referring to Julia Kristeva’s notion of the semiotic-symbolic and Pierre Nora’s concept of the site of memory, the author states that the act of giving the place symbolic meanings has its source in the experience of the artist's, participant’s, or spectator’s body.
