Celem poniższej pracy jest analiza znaczenia przeszłości w powieściach Johna Banville’a Eclipse, Shroud i Ancient Light. Pierwszy rozdział stanowi wprowadzenie do życia i twórczości autora; zostały w nim przedstawione również tematy i motywy powracające w wymienionych dziełach. Drugi rozdział skupia się na postaciach narratorów, poszukiwaniu przez nich własnego „ja” poprzez powrót do świata zdarzeń minionych oraz na języku, którego używają aby opisać to doświadczenie. Rozdział ten ilustruje, jak istotną rolę przeszłość odgrywa w kształtowaniu się tożsamości, rozumieniu historii własnego życia i nadawaniu jej spójności. W kolejnej części autorka pracy, interpretując podróże, których podejmują się bohaterowie, podkreśla, jak ściśle przeszłość związana jest z doświadczeniem miejsca oraz wykazuje, że powrót do niej w nietkniętym stanie jest niemożliwy. Ponadto, za pomocą wybranych pojęć z dziedziny psychoanalizy, bada spektralne formy, które mogą przybrać wytwory umysłu. Ostatni rozdział pracy ma na celu przedstawienie, na podstawie analizy rozważań bohaterów na temat pamięci i jej interakcji z wyobraźnią, wspominania jako wysoce kreatywnego i dynamicznego procesu.

The aim of the thesis is to discuss and analyse the significance of the past as well as its influence on the protagonists of Eclipse, Shroud and Ancient Light by John Banville. The first chapter introduces the writer – his life, work, vision of art – and the themes recurring in the aforementioned novels. The second chapter concentrates on the figures of the narrators, their search for the self by means of revisiting the world of what happened and the language they use to describe this particular experience. It aims at demonstrating that the act of recalling the past is crucial when it comes to the formation of self-identity, understanding one’s own personal story and imbuing it with the sense of coherence. In the subsequent chapter the author of the thesis examines the journeys Alexander Cleave and Axel Vander undertake so as to prove how closely the past is connected with the experience of place and that the return to it in its pristine state is not possible. Furthermore, using selected concepts derived from psychoanalysis, the chapter investigates spectral forms which the products of the mind can take. The purpose of the last chapter is to present remembering as highly creative and dynamic process on the basis of a detailed analysis of the narrators’ musings on the nature of memory and its interaction with imagination.
