Counterfactual Strategies in Polish Art After the Year 2000

Niniejsza praca podejmuje temat wykorzystania strategii kontrfaktycznych we współczesnych praktykach wizualnych w Polsce. Rozprawa składa się z dwóch części: teoretycznej i praktycznej. Trzy pierwsze rozdziały części teoretycznej stanowią wprowadzenie do zagadnienia i tło dla rozważań zawartych w dalszej części pracy. Omawiana jest w nich historia badań nad problemem, historyczne i kulturowe okoliczności, w których obliczu kształtowały i rozwijały się strategie, a także sposoby konstruowania i funkcje narracji kontrfaktycznych. Czwarty rozdział jest poświęcony analizie wybranych projektów artystycznych ilustrujących wykorzystanie omawianych strategii w kontekście trzech wyróżnionych problemów badawczych. Przedstawiona jest w nim analiza zagadnienia w świetle zachodzących od drugiej połowy XX wieku zmian w postrzeganiu i badaniu historii, omawiany jest również ideologiczny i krytyczny wymiar strategii kontrfaktycznych, a także narracje dotyczące teraźniejszości i przyszłości, które ujawniają trwające skutki czasów minionych. Obserwacje i spostrzeżenia poczynione w części teoretycznej stanowią podstawę projektu wystawy zaprezentowanego w drugiej części pracy.

The following thesis addresses the use of counterfactual strategies in contemporary visual practices in Poland. The dissertation consists of two parts – the theoretical and the practical one. The first three chapters of the theoretical part provide an introduction to the issue and the background for the considerations presented in the further part of the work. The aforementioned chapters are concerned with the history of research on the problem, the historical and cultural circumstances under which the strategies were formed and developed, as well as the methods of constructing and functions of counterfactual narratives. The fourth chapter is devoted to the analysis of selected art projects that illustrate the use of the discussed strategies in the context of the three selected research problems. The chapter presents an analysis of the issue in light of the changes in the perception and study of history that have taken place since the second half of the 20th century; it also discusses the ideological and critical dimensions of counterfactual strategies and focuses on narratives about the present and the future that reveal the lasting effects of the past. The observations and conclusions formulated in the theoretical part form the basis of the exhibition project presented in the second part of the work.
