From a Peasant Revolt to an Enlightened Revolution. Historiography and Commemoration of the 1798 Uprising in Ireland

Praca ta poświęcona jest obrazowi powstania irlandzkiego z 1798 r., obecnemu w miejscowej historiografii oraz prezentowanemu w czasie rocznicowych uroczystości (m.in w 1898, 1948 czy 1998 r.).Rozdział I. przybliża wydarzenia 1798 r. czytelnikowi polskiemu.Kolejne rozdziały poświęcone są temu, jak zmiany społeczne i polityczne wpływały na widzenie i rozumienie „1798” przez kolejne pokolenia, od początku XIX w. począwszy a na przełomie tysiącleci skończywszy.

This thesis focuses on how the Irish Uprising of 1798 has come to be presented in the local historiography and during the public commemoration ceremonies (e.g. in 1898, 1948, or 1998). The first chapter summarizes the events of 1798 for the benefit of the Polish reader.The following chapters focus on how the ever-changing social and political context influenced how the ‘1798’ was seen and understood by different generations, from the beginning of the 19th century to the dawn of new millennium.
