Facebook as a place of alienation or integration of students from Ukraine

Głównym tematem pracy jest rola portali społecznościowych, przede wszystkim Facebooka w integracji studentów z Ukrainy w Polsce. Zawarte są w niej definicje alienacji, adaptacji, integracji migrantów, teoria potrzeb Abrahama Maslowa, historia powstania social media oraz omówione są najważniejsze cechy portali społecznościowych. Szczególna uwaga została poświęcona portalowi Facebook oraz rosyjskiemu prototypowi Vkontakte, a także badaniom dotyczącym tego, jak i za pomocą czego młodzież ukraińska przystosowuje się do nowego otoczenia. Na potrzeby pracy autorka przeprowadziła wśród ukraińskich studentów studiujących w Polsce wywiady na temat ich adaptacji w Polsce oraz portali społecznościowych, w tym Facebooka, jako czynnika ich alienacji lub integracji. Starała się także odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy sieć społecznościowa Facebook pomaga studentom z Europy Wschodniej w adaptacji na studiach w Polsce.

The main subject of the thesis is the role of social networking sites, mainly Facebook, in the integration of Ukrainian students in Poland. Definitions of alienation, adaptation, integration of migrants, A. Maslow’s theory of needs, history of social media are included in the dissertation, and the most important features of social networking sites are discussed in it. Special emphasis has been placed on Facebook, the Russian prototype Vkontakt.ru as well as research on how young Ukrainians adapt to the new environment. For this project, the author conducted, among Ukrainian students studying in Poland, interviews concerning their adaptation in Poland as well as the social networking sites, including Facebook, as a factor in their alienation or integration. She also attempted to determine whether the Facebook social network helps students from Eastern Europe with adaptation during studies in Poland.
