Occurence of smooth snake (Coronella austriaca) near Cracow.

Gniewosz plamisty (Coronella austriaca) na terenie Polski jest gatunkiem rzadkim. Stosunkowo niedawno jego stanowiska odkryto w Krakowie. Celem poniższej pracy jest zebranie wiedzy o stanowiskach występowania tego gatunku w Krakowie, próba ustalenia jego preferencji siedliskowych na tym obszarze, a także próba oceny zagrożeń dla lokalnych populacji. Dane literaturowe wskazują, że wąż ten zasiedla różnorodne siedliska, pomimo popularnego przekonania o preferencji tego gatunku do siedlisk kserotermicznych. Wyniki badań prowadzonych w niniejszej pracy pokazują, że największym powierzchniowo i najczęstszym zbiorowiskiem roślinnym na stanowiskach gniewosza plamistego są łąki świeże, oraz że siedliska otwarte zajmują największą powierzchnię. Jednocześnie potwierdzono zasiedlanie różnorodnych siedlisk przez ten gatunek. Wyniki tej pracy mogą mieć praktyczne konsekwencje zarówno dla ochrony tego gatunku, jak i prób inwentaryzacji innych obszarów w okolicach Krakowa.

Smooth snake (Coronella austriaca) is a rare species in Poland. Recently, sites of its occurrence have been discovered in Cracow. The goal of this thesis were to collect data about occurrence of smooth snake in Cracow, assess its habitat preferences and attempt to define threats to local populations. Literature data indicates that this snake inhabits various habitats, despite common belief about its xerothermic preferences. Results of research conducted for this thesis proved that in smooth snake locations meadows cover the largest area compared to other plant communities; and that open habitats consisted the largest proportion of the locations compared to more closed habitats. Also, results confirmed that smooth snake inhabits various habitats. Results of this thesis might have an important value for both conservation efforts and monitoring of the species in vicinity of Cracow.
