Literatura dziecięca w przekładzie: analiza porównawcza dwóch tłumaczeń Małego Księcia Antoine'a de Saint-Exupéry’ego

Głównym zagadnieniem pracy jest analiza porównawcza dwóch tłumaczeń Małego Księcia Antoine’a de Saint-Exupéry’ego – pierwszego, autorstwa Katherine Woods, wydanego w 1943 roku oraz kolejnego, z roku 1995, stworzonego przez T.V.S. Cuffe’a. Przedmiotem analizy są różnice między tłumaczeniami, badane w kontekście zmian, jakie zaszły w podejściu do zagadnienia tłumaczenia literatury dziecięcej na przestrzeni czasu.Pierwszy rozdział przedstawia postać autora oraz powieść, koncentrując się na okolicznościach powstania książki oraz jej drodze do uzyskania statusu klasyki literatury dziecięcej.Drugi rozdział poświęcony jest zmianom w postrzeganiu literatury dziecięcej jako gatunku oraz dziecka jako odbiorcy, a także przeglądowi metod tłumaczenia literatury dziecięcej.Trzeci rozdział skupia się na analizie różnic pomiędzy obiema wersjami tłumaczenia rozpatrywanymi przez pryzmat następujących kategorii: użycie bezosobowej formy one oraz osobowej formy you; różnice w doborze słów; błędy w tłumaczeniu; długość zdań oraz wpływ luki czasowej na tłumaczenie. Pierwsza wersja przekładu odznacza się bardziej poetyckim tonem oraz nie jest tak bliska oryginałowi jak druga, której autor stara się oddać czystość oraz powściągliwość języka cechujące oryginał.Wnioski płynące z analizy wskazują na to, że występujące w analizowanych tłumaczeniach subtelne różnice mogą być wynikiem upływu czasu oraz zmian zaistniałych w podejściu do tłumaczenia literatury dziecięcej.

The subject of the thesis is a comparative analysis of two English translations of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. One of them was accomplished by Katherine Woods in 1943 and the second, subsequent one by T.V.S. Cuffe in 1995. The focus of the analysis is on the differences between the two versions in the context of changes in the approach to children’s literature translation.The first chapter presents the author and the novel as well as general background and the circumstances in which it was written.The second chapter is devoted to the change in the approaches to children’s literature as a genre, children as readers, and to different perspectives on children’s literature translation.The third chapter provides an analysis of differences between the two versions of The Little Prince translated into English in the following categories: the use impersonal one, personal you; different word choices; mistranslations; the length of sentences and the impact of time gap on the choices of both translators.The former version is more poetic in tone and less faithful to the original, while the latter one tries to preserve, as the translator himself mentions, some of the purity and restraint of the language of the original.The conclusion is that, although the translations have much in common, they differ in some aspects, which are possibly a result of the development in the approach to translation of children’s literature.
