The Chinese tributary system in pre-modern times

W pracy opisany został chiński system trybutarny w czasach przedwspółczesnych, będący systemem stosunków międzynarodowych skupionym wokół i uznającym wyższość państwa chińskiego. Kraje wchodzące w ten układ stosunków uzyskiwały zgodę dworu chińskiego na prowadzenie handlu z Chinami. Uznawały tym samym, przynajmniej w oficjalnych kontaktach z dworem chińskim, ideę tiānxià, według której wszystkie kraje Pod Niebem znajdowały się pod opieką i władzą cesarza chińskiego, Syna Niebios. Praca opisuje początki systemu trybutarnego, jak wyglądał w wybranych krajach na przestrzeni wieków oraz jego upadek, który nastał wraz z upadkiem ostatniej dynastii Chin – Qing.

The paper describes the Chinese tributary system in pre-modern times, which was a system of international relations centred around and recognising the supremacy of the Chinese state. Countries entering this system of relations obtained permission from the Chinese court to trade with China. They thus recognised, at least in their official dealings with the Chinese court, the idea of tiānxià, according to which all countries Under Heaven were under the protection and authority of the Chinese emperor, the Son of Heaven. The paper describes the origins of the tributary system, what it looked like in selected countries over the centuries, and its decline, which came with the fall of China's last dynasty – the Qing.
