Great Expectations translated by Antoni Mazanowski 1918–2018: Reissuing old translations as a practice of commercial publishing houses, based on the example of MG press

Praca magisterska poświęcona jest analizie porównawczej opublikowanego w 1918 roku przekładu powieści Wielkie Nadzieje Charlesa Dickensa, przypisywanego Antoniemu Mazanowskiemu, i jego nowego wydania, które ukazało się równo sto lat później nakładem wydawnictwa MG. Inspiracje badawcze stanowi hipoteza serii przekładowej (Retranslation Hypothesis) oraz praktyka redakcji przekładu. W pracy nakreślona została historia serii przekładowej Wielkich Nadziei. Przedstawiono także sylwetkę tłumacza. Omówione zostały praktyki współczesnych wydawnictw komercyjnych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wydawnictwa MG. Analiza porównawcza, skoncentrowana na opuszczeniach różnego typu, zmian w ortografii i przekładzie topo- i antroponimów wykazała, że wydania z 1918 oraz 2018 roku znacząco różnią się od siebie. Skala zmian jest na tyle duża, że według autorki pracy mamy do czynienia raczej z nowym przekładem niż z redakcją poprzedniego. Jak wykazała analiza recepcji czytelniczej, odbiorcy książki nie są świadomi zmian wprowadzonych w nowym wydaniu przekładu Mazanowskiego.

The thesis offers a comparative analysis of a Polish 1918 translation, attributed to Antoni Mazanowski, of Charles Dickens’s novel Great Expectations and its new edition, which was published by MG publishing house exactly one hundred years later. The research is inspired by the Retranslation Hypothesis and the publishing practice of revising translations. The thesis outlines the history of the Polish retranslations of Great Expectations. The profile of the translator is also presented. The practice of commercial publishing houses is discussed, with particular emphasis on the MG press. A comparative analysis that examined, among other things, various types of omissions, as well as changes in spelling and the translation of names showed that the 1918 and 2018 editions differ significantly from each other. The extent of the changes is so large that, according to the author, we are dealing with a retranslation rather than a revised translation. As the analysis of reader reception has shown, the readers of the book are not aware of the changes that were introduced in the new edition of Mazanowski's translation.
