Sport as an Arena of Identity Conflict - Case Study of Doping Scandal in Russian Sport 2014-2018

Sport jako widowisko kultury, aktywnie angażujące swoich uczestników - aktorów i widzów, jest areną zmagań nie tylko sportowych, ale też tożsamościowych. Afera dopingowa w sporcie rosyjskim, która wybuchła w 2014 roku pokazała, że w XXI wieku sfera polityki jest ciągle obecna w świecie sportu. W burzliwej dyskusji wokół tego skandalu dostrzec można, jak w różny sposób komentuje się te wydarzenia w świecie Zachodu i w Rosji, a przez to ujawnia się pewien konflikt dwóch odmiennych cywilizacji: zachodniej i rosyjskiej. Praca omawia problem tego swoistego "zderzenia cywilizacji" w kontekście rosyjskiego sportu i składa się z trzech części. W pierwszej omówiony został rozwój sportu na przestrzeni wieków i jego rola jako widowiska kulturowego oraz areny kształtowania tożsamości kolektywnej. Drugi rozdział odnosi się do świata rosyjskiego sportu i pokazuje, jak sport w przeszłości dotykał także sfery polityki i był wykorzystywany jako narzędzie propagandy w rękach państwa. W tym rozdziale poruszono też temat współczesnego sportu rosyjskiego i jego roli w kształtowaniu tożsamości rosyjskiej. Trzecia część pracy to studium przypadku afery dopingowej w rosyjskim sporcie, która omówiona została jako rodzaju gra społeczna. Analiza została oparta na materiale z zachodnich i rosyjskich mediów. W ten sposób w pracy pokazano, że zderzenie cywilizacji zachodniej i rosyjskiej, jakie można obserwować w ostatnich latach ujawnia się też w świecie sportu, a skandal dopingowy ostatnich lat może być uważany za jedno z odbić tego konfliktu.

Sport as a spectacle of culture, actively engages its participants - actors and spectators and is an arena of struggles not only in terms of not only sport but also identity. The recent doping scandal in Russian sport showed that in the 21st century, as previously in the sport history, the sphere of politics is still present on sport arenas. In the lively debate regarding this scandal it is possible to see how it is commented in different ways by Western and Russian media, and thus a certain conflict of two different civilizations - Western and Russian - is revealed. This thesis discusses the problem of "clash of civilizations" in the context of Russian sport and consists of three parts. In the first part the development of sport over the centuries and its role as a cultural spectacle and the arena of shaping of collective identity are described. The second chapter refers to the world of Russian sport and focuses on the way how sport in the past was influenced by politics and used as a propaganda tool in the hands of the state. This chapter also discusses the topic of contemporary Russian sport and its role in shaping the Russian identity nowadays. The third part of the thesis is a case study of a doping scandal in Russian sport, which was discussed as a social game. The analysis was based on Russian and Western media coverage on Russian doping scandal. In this way there is showed that the clash of Western and Russian civilization that can be observed in recent years is also present in the world of sport and the doping scandal of recent years can be considered as one of the reflections of this conflict.
