The literary portrayal of a teacher throughout the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries

Niniejsza praca przedstawia ewolucję literackiego portretu nauczyciela na przełomie trzech wieków, począwszy od XIX a zakończywszy na XXI. Zawiera ona wiadomości z zakresu pedagogiki i ogólnej historii edukacji. Jej celem było prześledzenie literatury, która opowiada o nauczycielach w poszczególnych wiekach. Na tej podstawie stworzyłam opis pedagogów dzieląc literaturę na wyżej wymienione stulecia, aby usystematyzować informacje o nich. Zakres pracy obejmował studia nad przemianami historycznymi, w które wpisany jest obraz nauczycieli. Tworzenie pracy polegało na zebraniu odpowiednich lektur, aby móc zwięźle i precyzyjne, a przede wszystkim chronologicznie, usystematyzować motyw nauczyciela w polskiej prozie. Rezultatem jest przekrój powieści i nowel w oparciu o obraz wychowawców, który możemy odnaleźć w pracy. Dzięki odszukaniu odpowiednich książek udało mi się przedstawić obraz różnych nauczycieli, opisać ich stosunek do przedmiotu, uczniów i szkoły oraz określić miejsce, jakie zajmowali w społeczeństwie danego okresu. Literatura ukazuje to doskonale i w sposób klarowny pozwoliła mi na sformułowanie wniosków, które zawarte są w podsumowaniu każdego rozdziału pracy.

This thesis is a representation of the evolution of the literary portrayal of a teacher throughout the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. This thesis encapsulates information on the field of pedagogy and the history of education in general. The aim of this thesis was to peruse literary works in order to find in them the portrayal of a teacher visible in particular centuries. The literary works were divided appropriately based on the aforementioned centuries, in order to systematize the information, and on their basis the profile of a teacher was formulated. The scope of the material of this thesis includes studies on the historical changes with which the role of a teacher was associated. The research was carried out by compiling a list of relevant literary works which aided in conducting a concise and chronologically correct systematization of the motif of a teacher in Polish prose. Consequently, a selection of novels and short stories, which include the portrayal of a teacher, was made. Due to the selection of relevant literary works, the thesis presents the portrayal of different types of teachers and describes their attitude towards their field of expertise, the students and the school, as well as their position in the social hierarchy at that time. Literature proves to be a great source of information and allows for the formulation of clear conclusions, which are included in the summary of each chapter.
