The sound of saudade. A musical & cinematic portraiture of Lisbon

Praca ta poświęcona będzie analizie portretu Lizbony i opisaniu atmosfery towarzyszącej jej przedstawieniom. Stolica Portugalii pojawia się w wielu tekstach kultury, a twórcy, którzy kreują jej obraz w swoich dziełach, bardzo często zwracają uwagę na podobne cechy i zjawiska. W przypadku tego miasta, aby w pełni zrozumieć jego portret przedstawiany w sztuce i literaturze, trzeba także wgłębić się w jego historię i kulturę. Pierwszy rozdział skupiony jest na Lizbonie obrazowanej przez Wima Wendersa w "Lisbon story", a także przez Marcina Kydryńskiego w książce "Lizbona. Muzyka moich ulic". Teksty te powstały w różnym czasie i ukazują różną perspektywę, jednak prezentują zaskakującą ilość wspólnych cech w prowadzonej narracji. Jednym z najbardziej zwracających uwagę elementów tego miasta, jest jego soundscape. Muzyka zdaje się odgrywać znaczącą rolę w portrecie Lizbony - mowa tu między innymi o fado, istotnym elemencie portugalskiej kultury, który wraz z pojęciem saudade składa się na kształt tożsamości narodowej Portugalczyków. Drugi rozdział ma na celu przybliżyć historię tego kraju, a także najważniejsze zjawiska występujące w jego kulturze, które miały wpływ na kształtowanie się portretu Lizbony. Rozdział trzeci wyjaśnia teorię soundscape'u i bada portret dźwiękowy miasta na podstawie opisywanych wcześniej tekstów kultury. Elementy składające się na soundscape Lizbony nie zmieniały się na przestrzeni ostatnich dekad, co pokazuje także twórczość Fernanda Pessoi, która została przybliżona w rozdziale czwartym. Stolica Portugalii obrazowana w wielu tekstach, staje się symbolem kultury tego kraju - to właśnie elementy takie jak saudade, fado, melancholia, a nawet żółty tramwaj miejski budują jej portret.

This paper is devoted to the analysis of the portraiture of Lisbon and describing its general atmosphere. The capital city of Portugal appears in many different texts of culture, and the authors that creates its image are usually emphasizing the same features. To fully comprehend the Lisbon's portraiture, it is neccesary to desribe also the historical and cultural context. First chapter is concentrated on Lisbon portrayed by Wim Wenders in "Lisbon story", as well as the perspective of Marcin Kydryński in his book "Lizbona. Muzyka moich ulic". Those works were created at a different time and show different views, however they all present a surprising amount of common features. One of the most interesting components of the city, is its soundscape. Music seems to play the main role in creating the portraiture of Lisbon; fado music, as well as the concept of saudade, are shaping the national identity of Portugal. Second chapter aims to depict the history of this country and its most important cultural phenomena, as they all had a big impact in constructing the portraiture of Lisbon. Third chapter uses the theory of soundscape to examine the role of sounds in building the city's image. The analysis is based on texts of culture mentioned earlier in the paper. All the components that created Lisbon's soundscape have not really changed in recent years and books written by Fernando Pessoa described in the fourth chapter are good examples to show this phenomena. The capital city of Portugal, portrayed in many texts, became a symbol of the portuguese culture - it is saudade, fado, melancholy and even the yellow city tram are building Lisbon's image.
