Collage - its translation and imagery. An analysis of Jerzy Juruś’s translation of the exhibition catalogue Wisława Szymborska KOLAŻE | COLLAGES (MOCAK the Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow) in the context of the cognitive linguistics theory of mental imagery and the linguistic image of the world

W niniejszej pracy analizie został poddany dwujęzyczny polsko-angielski katalog wystawy prezentowanej w 2014 roku przez Muzeum Sztuki Współczesnej w Krakowie MOCAK pt. Wisława Szymborska KOLAŻE | COLLAGES (wydanie trzecie, 2022). Analiza przekładu tekstów wprowadzających do katalogu oraz treści zamieszczonych na samych kolażach opierała się na teoriach obrazowania językoznawstwa kognitywnego oraz językowego obrazu świata przedstawionych w zarysie w części teoretycznej pracy, gdzie poruszono także wątki dotyczące przekładu muzealnego, poszukiwań jego definicji oraz specyfiki tej dziedziny. W części analitycznej pracy wskazane zostały problemy tłumaczeniowe oraz przesunięcia obrazowania powstałe w procesie przekładu, takie jak: przekład formy i deminutywy, zawężenia i poszerzenia znaczenia, różnice gramatyczne oraz przekład płci, a także kreatywne wybory tłumacza. Niniejsza praca miała na celu zastosowanie teorii obrazowania w świetle językoznawstwa kognitywnego i językowego obrazu świata w badaniach nad tekstami powstałymi lub prezentowanymi w obrębie instytucji muzealnych. Wnioski po dokonanej analizie wskazują na duże możliwości badawcze nad tekstami muzealnymi z uwagi na szeroki obszar działalności instytucji muzealnych, które to tworzą różnorodne treści o szerokim zakresie tematycznym, co z kolei stanowi niemałe wyzwanie zarówno dla teoretyków, jak i praktyków przekładu.

The present study is devoted to the analysis of interlingual Polish-English translation of the introduction to the exhibition catalogue and the content of the collages created by the artist Wisława Szymborska and included in the bilingual catalogue of the exhibition presented in 2014 by the MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow entitled Wisława Szymborska KOLAŻE | COLLAGES (third edition, 2022). The analysis was based on the cognitive linguistics theory of mental imagery and the linguistic image of the world. In the theoretical part of the thesis, apart from the above-mentioned linguistic theories, issues related to museum translation are also discussed, including the search for definitions and the most important characteristics of this field. In the analytical part, translation problems are indicated, followed by a detailed study of imagery shifts resulting from the translation process, such as translation of form and diminutives, narrowing and broadening of meaning, grammatical differences and problems related to translating gender, as well as creative choices made by the translator. The present study’s aim was to apply the theory of imagery and the linguistic image of the world to research conducted on texts created or presented within museum institutions. Conclusions drawn from the analysis indicate that there are significant opportunities for research on museum texts due to the broad area of activity of museum institutions, which produce a variety of content with a wide range of topics. This poses a considerable challenge for both theorists and practitioners of translation.
