„Idiota” na uniwersytecie. Analiza powieści akademickiej na podstawie książki „The Idiot” Elif Batuman

Głównym celem tej pracy jest wyodrębnienie cech powieści akademickich na podstawie książki „The Idiot” autorstwa Elif Batuman. Gatunek ten nie ma jednoznacznie określonej definicji, dlatego jako pierwsze przedstawione zostało tło historyczne i kulturowe, aby nakreślić cechy i zilustrować główne atrybuty takich powieści. W rozdziale drugim, który rozpoczyna analizę, przedstawione zostały wybrane cechy powieści akademickich, takie jak łączenie przez pisarzy faktu i fikcji oraz trudności z jakimi muszą się mierzyć bohaterowie w kontekście wejścia w środowisko akademickie. Analiza wyjaśnia również, dlaczego anglo-amerykańskie uniwersytety są przedstawiane jako odizolowane miejsca i w jakim celu satyra jest wykorzystywana w powieściach akademickich. Ostatni rozdział stanowi omówienie intertekstualnych związków pomiędzy powieścią Batuman, a „Idiotą” Fiodora Dostojewskiego. Ta część skupia się na ukazaniu podobieństw pomiędzy głównymi bohaterami: Selin a księciem Myszkinem. Przeprowadzona analiza przybliża cechy powieści akademickiej i ukazuje, jak „The Idiot” wyróżnia się spośród innych pozycji tego gatunku poprzez intertekstualny dialog z powieścią Dostojewskiego.

The main aim of this thesis is to examine the features of academic novels based on The Idiot by Elif Batuman. Through the examples from the book, I explore the main characteristics of campus fiction and discuss how they were implemented in Batuman’s book. Firstly, a historical and cultural background is provided to introduce the genre. Then, in the second chapter, which is divided into four parts, I present the main premises concerning academic novels. To explain the poetics of the genre, I focus on the employment of life writing in such novels, the role of an outsider, and the university as an isolated space. I also explain to what end satire is applied in academic novels and how it is connected to disillusionment with the institution. The last chapter is an exploration of intertextualities between Batuman’s novel and The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky. This part focuses on the parallels between the protagonists: Selin and Prince Myshkin. The purpose of the analysis is to determine the features of campus novels and to show how The Idiot stands out among other books in the genre because of the intertextual links with Dostoevsky's novel.
