Clashes of the Mamluk Sultanate with the Mongols

Niniejsza praca podejmuje tematykę konfliktów i starć, które rozgrywały się pomiędzy Sułtanatem Mameluków a Mongołami. Składa się z trzech rozdziałów. W pierwszym z nich zostało przedstawione tło historyczne, w tym: proces powstania Imperium Mongolskiego, jego podboje, wyodrębnienie się Ilchanatu, najważniejsze cechy stylu życia Mongołów, początki niewolniczych armii w świecie arabskim, przejęcie władzy przez Mameluków w Egipcie oraz, podobnie jak w przypadku Mongołów, cechy ich stylu życia. W rozdziale drugim omówiono następnie kwestie związane z rzemiosłem wojennym obu stron, takie jak: struktura armii, proces rekrutacji, wyposażenie i wierzchowce, techniki oraz strategie bitewne. Rozdział trzeci zaś, dostarcza wiedzy na temat przebiegu najważniejszych bitewnych spotkań, a także ich wyników. Nadrzędnym celem była tutaj analiza przygotowania wojskowego obu stron oraz źródeł ich zwycięstw i porażek. Problem badawczy stanowiło zaś pytanie o ostateczne powody zwycięstwa strony mameluckiej.

This thesis deals with the subject of conflicts and clashes that took place between the Mamluk Sultanate and the Mongols. It contains three chapters. In the first of them the historical background was presented, including: the process of establishing the Mongol Empire, its conquests, the emergence of the Ilkhanate, the most important features of the Mongol lifestyle, the beginnings of slave armies in the Arab world, seizing the power by the Mamluks in Egypt and, similarly to the Mongols, features of their lifestyle. Then, in the second chapter the focus was on the issues related to the craft of war on both sides, such as: army structure, recruitment process, equipment and mounts, techniques and battle strategies. The third chapter on the other hand provides the knowledge about the course of the most important battle meetings and their results. The main purpose of this work was to analyze military preparation of both sides and the sources of their victories and defeats. The research problem was connected to the question of the ultimate reasons for the victory of the Mamluk side.
