Table f Ranks in the literary work of Nikolai Gogol

Tematem niniejszej pracy jest Tabela rang w twórczości Mikołaja Gogola. Celem pracy jest omówienie wpływu Tabeli rang na rosyjskie społeczeństwo urzędnicze.Pierwszy rozdział został poświecony tłu historycznemu, na podstawie którego opisano wprowadzone przez Piotra I reformy, w tym dekret o Tabeli rang z 1722 r. Opisano główne założenia i cele Tabeli, wskazano także jak wpłynęła na sytuacje kobiet, a także opisano historię powstania Petersburga. Drugi rozdział poświęcony został analizie wybranych opowiadań M. Gogola z cyklu opowieści petersburskich. Na podstawie analizy bohaterów przedstawiono wszechobecny strach oraz niezdrowe relacje międzyludzkie. Trzeci rozdział został poświęcony analizie komedii „Rewizor”. Na przykładzie bohaterów ukazano okrutny świat skorumpowanych urzędników i brak zasad moralnych charakterystyczny dla warstwy urzędniczej.Z analizy wynika, że Tabela rang miała destrukcyjny wpływ na ludzką psychikę, tym samym pozbawiając ludzi poczucia własnej wartości.

The topic of the present paper is the Table of Ranks in the literary work of Nikolai Gogol. The purpose of the paper is to discuss the influence of the Table of Ranks on the Russian government officials.The first chapter is devoted to the historical background, particularly reforms introduced by Peter the Great, including the Table of Ranks of 1722. The chapter describes the assumptions and aims of issuing the decree, shows how it affected the situation of women and presents the origins of St Petersburg. The second chapter contains the analysis of chosen short stories from N. Gogol’s Petersburg Tales. Based on the character analysis, it shows the omnipresent fear and unhealthy interpersonal relationships. The third chapter is devoted to the analysis of the satirical comedy, The Government Inspector. Illustrated with the examples of its characters, the chapter presents cruelty, corruption and the lack of moral values, typical for the government officials.The analyses conclude that the Table of Ranks had destructive impact on human psyche, lowering people’s self-esteem.
