Celem pracy jest przybliżenie czytelnikowi historii i założeń filozofii buddyjskiej z wyszczególnieniem tradycji zen oraz wyjątkowych uwarunkowań kulturowych, które doprowadziły do jego powstania, by następnie przedstawić i omówić postać Alana Wattsa — XX wiecznego myśliciela, który spopularyzował termin zen w Stanach Zjednoczonych lat pięćdziesiątych, skąd zyskał on tylko większą popularność na Zachodzie.
The topic of this thesis is to make the reader familiar with history and assumptions of the buddhist philosophy, especially with the tradition of zen and the unique cultural conditions which took part in it's creation, to then introduce and discuss the character of Alan Watts — the 20th-century thinker who popularized the term zen in the United States in the 1950s, from where it only gained more popularity in the West.
