The Child Figure in the Museum Narratives of the Holocaust. Based on the exhibition titled “The Girl in the diary. Searching for Rywka from the Łódź Ghetto.” at The Galicia Jewish Museum in Cracow.

Celem pracy jest omówienie występującej w holocaustowej narracji muzealnej figury dziecka. Szczególną uwagę zwracam na problem zasadności jej zastosowania w tym dyskursie. Szczegółowej analizie została poddana wystawa “Dziewczyna z pamiętnika. W poszukiwaniu Rywki z łódzkiego getta” w krakowskim Żydowskim Muzeum Galicja. Ważnym zagadnieniem poruszanym w pracy jest problem możliwych nadużyć wynikających z wykorzystania dziecięcej postaci do reprezentacji tragicznych wydarzeń II wojny światowej. Rozważania prowadzone są na podstawie zestawienia światowych i polskich muzeów, które realizują temat Zagłady, a w których rola dziecka jest mocno akcentowana. W pracy omówiony został wpływ wykorzystania figury dziecka na emocjonalny odbiór odwiedzającego.

The aim of this thesis is to discuss the figure of a child in the museum account of the Holocaust. The treatment principally concerns appropriateness of its application in the discourse. The exhibition titled “The Girl in the diary. Searching for Rywka from the Łódź Ghetto.” at The Galicia Jewish Museum in Cracow was particularly analised. The issue of possible exploitation of a child character used in order to represent the tragedy of the Second World War episodes is considered. The discussion is based on the profile of Polish and foreign museums that try to depict the subject of the Holocaust, emphasizing the role of a child. The study reflects upon the influence of a child figure on the emotional perception of the visitor.
