The role of executive functions in creative thinking

Celem niniejszych badań było sprawdzenie, czy i jaką rolę pełnią funkcje wykonawcze w myśleniu twórczym, które może prowadzić do wytworzenia nowych i wartościowych produktów. Z racji tego, że może być analizowany jako składające się z podstawowych procesów poznawczych postanowiono sprawdzić zależności: przerzutność uwagi (attentional set-shifting), monitorowania (monitoring) oraz hamowania (inhibition) z myśleniem twórczym. W tym celu przebadano 42 osoby (osoby pracujące oraz studentów różnych kierunków), które wykonały zadania poznawcze mierzące przerzutność uwagi, monitorowanie i hamowanie oraz test mierzący myślenie dywergencyjne i zadanie mierzące myślenie konwergencyjne. Badanie pokazało, że przerzutność uwagi i monitorowanie związane są płynnością, rozumianą jako ilość wytwarzanych pomysłów oraz giętkością rozumianą jako zdolność do wytwarzania pomysłów z różnych kategorii. Wyniki nie wykazały związku myślenia konwergencyjnego z badanymi funkcjami wykonawczymi. Na podstawie wyników przypuszcza się, że myślenie dywergencyjne i konwergencyjne są procesami niezależnymi oraz że przerzutność uwagi i monitorowanie pełni ważną rolę w procesie generowania różnorodnych pomysłów, będącym jednym z etapów twórczego rozwiązywania problemów.

The aim of this research was to verify whether and what role executive functions in creative thinking, which can lead to the creation of new and valuable products. Due to the fact, that it can be analyzed as consisting of basic cognitive processes, it was decided to verify the dependencies: attentional set-shifting, monitoring and inhibition with creative thinking. 42 people (working persons and students of different faculties) were examined. They completed the cognitive tasks which assesed shifting, monitoring and inhibition and a divergent thinking test and convergent thinking test. The study showed that attentional set-shifting and monitoring are related to liquidity understood as the amount of ideas produced and flexibility understood as an ability for providing diverse ideas from various categories. The results did not show any relation between convergent thinking and the executive functions. The results suggest that divergent and convergent thinking are independent processes and that attentional set-shifting and monitoring play an important role in the process of generating various ideas, being one of the stages of creative problem solving.
