Racine's Roxane and Athalie: Two Women in Power

W mojej pracy licencjackiej koncentruję się na porównaniu dwóch postaci kobiecych z tragedii Jean Racine’a – Roksany z „Bajazeta” oraz tytułowej bohaterki sztuki „Atalia”, które są zarówno kobietami u władzy, jak i kobietami potwornymi. Pierwszy rozdział jest poświęcony analizie podobieństw i różnic pomiędzy tymi dwiema postaciami. Drugi, w oparciu o tę analizę, odtwarza portret kobiet u władzy wykreowany przez autora, uwzględniając tło historyczne XVII wieku oraz kwestie poruszane na fali trwającego wówczas „sporu o kobiety”.

In my bachelor’s thesis I concentrate on two female characters from Jean Racine’s tragedies – Roxane from “Bajazet” and the eponymous heroine of “Athalie”, who are both women in power, as well as monstrous women. The first chapter is dedicated to the exploration of similarities and differences between those two characters. The second, drawing from this analysis, focuses on retracing a portrait of women in power created by the playwright, while taking into account the historical background of the seventeenth century and the issues discussed within the “querelle des femmes”.

Dans mon mémoire de licence, je me concentre sur la comparaison de deux personnages féminins des tragédies de Jean Racine – Roxane de Bajazet et l’héroïne éponyme d’Athalie qui sont toutes les deux des femmes au pouvoir, ainsi que des femmes monstrueuses. Le premier chapitre est dédié à l’analyse des similarités et des différences entre ces deux personnages. Le deuxième, sur la base de cette analyse, se focalise sur la reconstitution des portraits des femmes au pouvoir créés par le dramaturge, en prenant en compte le fond historique du XVIIe siècle et les enjeux de la querelle des femmes.
