The influence of nurses' empathy level on their attitudes towards coercive measures
Słowa kluczowe: empatia, pielęgniarstwo, środki przymusu bezpośredniego, postawy personelu medycznego, deeskalacja, pacjent agresywny
Keywords: empathy, nursing, coercive measures, healthcare staff attitudes, de-escalation, aggressive patient
Materiały i metody: Badanie przeprowadzono metodą sondażu diagnostycznego wśród 109 pielęgniarek i pielęgniarzy. Wykazano natomiast istotny związek pomiędzy poziomem empatii a postawami wobec stosowania środków przymusu bezpośredniego.Wnioski: Empatia odgrywa istotną rolę w kształtowaniu postaw pielęgniarek i pielęgniarzy wobec stosowania środków przymusu bezpośredniego. Osoby bardziej empatyczne częściej dostrzegają negatywne konsekwencje działań ograniczających autonomię pacjenta. Rozwijanie kompetencji interpersonalnych i deeskalacyjnych może sprzyjać bardziej świadomemu podejmowaniu decyzji klinicznych.
Introduction: Empathy is an important component of professional nursing care, influencing both the nurse–patient relationship and clinical decision-making. It is particularly significant in situations involving the use of coercive measures, where ensuring safety must be balanced with respect for patients’ rights and dignity.Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between the level of empathy among nurses and their attitudes toward the use of coercive measures. Additionally, the impact of selected professional factors on empathy levels and attitudes was examined.Materials and methods: The study was conducted using a diagnostic survey method among 109 nurses. The Perth Empathy Scale (PES) and the Staff Attitude to Coercion Scale (SACS) were used. Statistical analyses were performed using the Mann–Whitney U test, the Kruskal–Wallis test, and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. Results: The participants demonstrated a moderate overall level of empathy, with higher scores in cognitive empathy than in emotional empathy. No significant differences were found in empathy levels or attitudes toward coercive measures with regard to ward type, work experience, or participation in communication and de-escalation training. However, a significant relationship was found between empathy levels and attitudes toward the use of coercive measures. Conclusions: Empathy plays an important role in shaping nurses’ attitudes toward the use of coercive measures. More empathetic individuals were more likely to recognize the negative consequences of actions that limit patients’ autonomy. Developing interpersonal, communication, and de-escalation skills may contribute to more informed clinical decision-making.
