Female identity in Izabela Filipiak's "Absolute Amnesia"

Niniejsza praca stanowi analizę powieści Absolutna amnezja Izabeli Filipiak, koncentrując się na tytułowej amnezji jako metaforze kryzysu tożsamości na płaszczyznach narodowej, genderowej i seksualnej. Amnezja, będąca symbolem oderwania od przeszłości i społecznych norm, umożliwia bohaterce redefinicję swojej tożsamości poza narzuconymi jej rolami. Analiza literacka ukazuje, jak autorka przedstawia postacie kobiece, które, z jednej strony, zmagają się z opresyjnymi normami kulturowymi PRL, a z drugiej – poszukują własnych dróg do samorealizacji. Wykorzystując koncepcję performatywności płci Judith Butler oraz teorie queer, praca krytycznie ocenia binarne rozumienie płci, zwracając uwagę na jego ograniczenia w odzwierciedlaniu złożoności tożsamości kobiecej. Przeanalizowane zostają także relacje międzyludzkie – zarówno damsko-męskie, jak i damsko-damskie – które odgrywają kluczową rolę w kształtowaniu tożsamości bohaterek. Wnioski wskazują, że Absolutna amnezja jest refleksją nad możliwością wyzwolenia się z narzuconych struktur społecznych, a tytułowa amnezja staje się narzędziem umożliwiającym bohaterkom stworzenie nowej, autonomicznej tożsamości w obliczu opresyjnych norm kulturowych i historycznych.

The academic article analyzes Izabela Filipiak's novel Absolute Amnesia, focusing on the title amnesia as a metaphor for identity crisis on the national, gender and sexual levels. Amnesia, a symbol of detachment from the past and social norms, enables the protagonist to redefine her identity outside of her imposed roles. The literary analysis shows how the author portrays female characters who, on the one hand, struggle against the oppressive cultural norms of the communist Poland, and on the other, seek their own paths to self-realization. Using Judith Butler's concept of gender performativity and queer theories, the work critically evaluates the gender binary, noting its limitations in reflecting the complexity of female identity. It also examines the interpersonal relationships - both male-female and female-female - that play a key role in shaping the identity of female protagonists. The conclusions indicate that Absolute Amnesia is a reflection on the possibility of liberation from imposed social structures, and that the title amnesia becomes a tool that enables the heroines to create a new, autonomous identity in the face of oppressive cultural and historical norms.
