W pracy zawarto analizę postaci Bhagwana Shree Rajneesha, szeroko znanego jako Osho. Podjęto próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie kim był? Przewodnikiem duchowym czy szarlatanem? Opisano dzieciństwo i młodość Osho, środowisko w jakim się wychowywał i dorastał oraz wpływ wychowujących go dziadków na kształtowanie się jego charakteru i poglądów. Zaprezentowano założenia filozofii Osho, poglądy na temat wiary, religii oraz religijności, które to wzajemnie wyraźnie rozgraniczał, a także bardzo negatywny stosunek do tradycji guru i sannjasy. Scharakteryzowano jego koncepcje dynamicznej medytacji, opierającej się na założeniu, iż przy wystarczającej praktyce możliwe jest utrzymanie stanu medytacji w trakcie wykonywania codziennych zajęć. Przedstawiono początki działalności Rajneesha, najpierw jako wykładowcy uniwersyteckiego, potem założyciela pierwszych obozów medytacyjnych i aśramu w Punie. Scharakteryzowano funkcjonowanie ruchu w obrębie aśramu, jego rozkwit oraz schyłek działalności, zakończony ucieczką do Stanów Zjednoczonych. Istotną część pracy stanowi opis działalności Osho w USA, który rozpoczął się od zakupu działki w stanie Oregon i założeniu tam nowej gminy - Rajneeshpuram. Ukazano tu działalność Rajneesha w bardzo szybko rozwijającej się gminie na tle wiążących się z tym problemów i skandali. Przedstawiono konflikty gminy z władzami oraz okolicznymi mieszkańcami, którzy czuli się zagrożeni sąsiedztwem sekty. Przedstawiono również problemy jakie zaistniały wewnątrz gminy Rajneeshpuram, wiążące się przede wszystkim z osobą sekretarki Rajneesha, której przypisuje się niezgodne z prawem działania bez wiedzy Osho. W końcowej części opisano bezpośrednie przyczyny i przebieg spektakularnego upadku gminy Rajneesha w Oregonie oraz jego powrót do Indii.

This paper contains an analysis of a Bhagwana Shree Rajneesh, widely known as Osho. An attempt was made to answer the question who he was? Spiritual guide or charlatan? This paper presents an overview of Osho’s childhood and youth, the environment in which he grew and the effect of being raised by his grandparents on the formation of his character and views. There have been presented the philosophy of Osho, views on faith, religion and religiousness, which were clearly dissociated, and a very negative attitude to the tradition of guru and sannyasa. There have been made characterization of the concepts of dynamic meditation, which is based on the assumption that with enough practice, it is possible to maintain the meditative state while carrying out daily activities. The paper presents the beginning of Rajneesh’s activity, first as a university lecturer, later as the founder of the first meditation camps and ashram in Poon. Describes the working of movement within the ashram, the progress and decline of its activity, completed by retreat to the United States. An important part of the work is the description of Osho’s activities in the United States, which began with the purchase of land in Oregon and establishing another community - Rajneeshpuram. There has been shown the activity of Rajneesh in a very fast-growing community with the background of related problems and scandals. There has been made the presentation of conflicts between community and authorities and local residents who felt threatened by proximity of the sect. There have been also presented problems that occurred within the commune of Rajneeshpuram, connected with Osho’s personal assistant who was accused of illegal activities. The final section of the paper describes the direct causes and course of the spectacular collapse of Rajneesh’s commune in Oregon, and his return to India.
