Celem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej jest udowodnienie, że normy społeczne przezwyciężają indywidualność w „Wieku niewinności” Edith Wharton oraz „Portrecie damy” Henry’ego Jamesa. Po przeanalizowaniu tych dwóch powieści, doszłam do wniosku, iż indywidualiści są bezsilni w walce z normami społecznymi i muszą się do nich dostosować, by zyskać akceptację. W rezultacie, obowiązek wobec społeczeństwa jest ważniejszy niż szczęście jednostki.Pierwszy rozdział pracy dotyczy powieści „Wiek niewinności”. Uwzględnione w nim zostały informacje o autorce i czynnikach, które zainspirowały ją do napisania utworu: jej życie w Nowym Jorku w latach siedemdziesiątych XIX wieku oraz normy społeczne panujące w mieście. Ta część poświęcona jest analizie konwencji obecnych w powieści i sposobu, w jaki główni bohaterowie tracą swoje poczucie indywidualności poprzez podporządkowanie się im.Drugi rozdział poświęcony jest powieści „Portret damy”. Zawarte w nim zostały informacje na temat międzynarodowej tematyki w twórczości Jamesa oraz roli kobiet w XIX wieku. Jest w nim również analiza społecznego i kulturowego aspektu obecnego w powieści. Głównym celem rozdziału jest udowodnienie, że nawet osoba tak ceniąca sobie niezależność, jak Isabel, traci ją w momencie postąpienia zgodnie z normami społecznymi – tj. wyjścia za mąż. Trzeci rozdział ma na celu ukazanie zjawiska rezygnacji z własnego szczęścia na rzecz solidarności ze społeczeństwem. Potwierdza on, iż w obu powieściach bohaterowie nie są w stanie zachować swojej indywidualności i podążać za swoimi pragnieniami. Muszą się poświecić, aby utrzymać swoje miejsce w społeczeństwie.

The aim of this thesis is to confirm that social conventions triumph over individuality in The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton and The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James. Having analyzed the two novels, I came to a conclusion that the individual is powerless when it comes to social norms and one needs to adhere to them in order to be accepted. As a result, the demands of society become of greater importance than happiness of an individual.The first chapter of my thesis is concerned with The Age of Innocence. I provide some background information about Edith Wharton and the factors which influenced her to write the novel: her life in New York of the 1870s and conventions that governed the city. This part is focused on the analysis of social conventions present in the novel and the way the main characters lose their sense of individuality while following them. The second chapter focuses on The Portrait of a Lady. It provides information about Henry James’s preoccupation with international theme and the position of women in the nineteenth century. It also offers an analysis of the social and cultural aspects which are present in the novel. The main aim of this chapter is to confirm that even Isabel Archer who valued her independence most is lost on account of conforming to social norms by means of getting married.The third chapter approaches the matter of renouncing happiness of an individual for the sake of society. It affirms that in both of the novels, the characters are unable to preserve their selfhood and follow their desires. They need to sacrifice themselves in order to maintain social identity.
