Christian legends in the Quran in the light of surah Al-Kahf

Celem niniejszej pracy była próba ukazania wpływów tradycji chrześcijańskich znajdujących się w Koranie na podstawie sury osiemnastej „Grota”, skupiając się przede wszystkim na dwóch zawartych w niej opowieściach — o Siedmiu Śpiących i Dwurogim. Praca opisuje wersje chrześcijańskie tych legend oraz ich tło historyczne. Następnie przedstawia sposób przekazania tejże legendy w Koranie oraz w tradycji egzegetycznej, aby na koniec móc porównać wariant chrześcijański z muzułmańskim. Praca koncentruje się także na pokazaniu możliwych źródeł chrześcijańskich i żydowskich, z których Muḥammad mógł czerpać informacje, a następnie inspirować się nimi podczas tworzenia Koranu. Wzięta pod uwagę została sytuacja religijna w Mekce przed powstaniem islamu oraz za czasów Proroka, jak również konkretne wydarzenia z jego życia mogące doprowadzić do styczności z wcześniej wspomnianymi tradycjami.

The purpose of this BA thesis is to demonstrate Christian influences that are present in the Quran based on surah 18th “The Cave”, focusing mainly on two stories included in it — about Seven Sleepers and The Two-Horned. The thesis describes Christian versions of both legends and depicts their historical background. The way the legend is presented in the Quran and its exegesis is then pictured to later compare the Christian tale with its Muslim equivalent. The thesis also concentrates on showing possible Christian and Jewish sources from which Muḥammad could have derived pieces of information that he later got inspired by during the creation of the Quran. The religious situation in Mecca before the beginning of Islam and during Prophet’s lifetime was also taken into consideration, as well as certain situations from his life that could have led to coming into contact with previously mentioned traditions.
