Coat of arms of Bona Sforza in the Jagiellonian heraldry

Tematem niniejszej pracy jest herb królowej Bony Sforzy w heraldyce jagiellońskiej. W XVI-wiecznej heraldyce Jagiellonów z dużą częstotliwością pojawia się herb Sforzów, będący herbem królowej Bony, małżonki Zygmunta I Starego. Jego występowanie zauważalne jest na pieczęciach, monetach, dyplomach kancelarii królewskiej, medalach, w rzeźbie nagrobnej i architektonicznej, na wyrobach rzemiosła artystycznego, w malarstwie i grafice książkowej oraz na wielu innych obiektach. Praca podzielona jest na cztery główne rozdziały i podrozdziały. Pierwszy rozdział zawiera stan badań nad osobą i panowaniem królowej Bony. Umieszczono w nim literaturę odnoszącą się w całości, bądź w części do osoby Bony Sforzy oraz charakteru sprawowanych przez królową rządów w państwie polsko-litewskim.Kolejny rozdział to krótka nota biograficzna poświęcona królowej Bonie Sforzy d’Aragona, stanowiąca wprowadzenie do zasadniczej części pracy.W trzecim rozdziale autor charakteryzuje pokrótce obecny stan badań nad zagadnieniem herbu Sforzów w heraldyce jagiellońskiej, gdzie wskazuje na brak opracowania powyższego tematu w naukowej literaturze historycznej i historyczno-sztucznej.W ostatnim rozdziale przedstawiono historię herbu, zaś poszczególne podrozdziały poświęcono wskazaniu obiektów, na których herb występuję i omówieniu niesionych przezeń treści.W podsumowaniu podano wnioski końcowe płynące z rozważań poczynionych w pracy, dotyczące miejsca i roli herbu Sforzów w heraldyce jagiellońskiej oraz ogólnym nakreśleniu spełnianych przezeń funkcji i niesionych treści.Pracę zamyka nota bibliograficzna, w której wyodrębniono źródła i opracowania wykorzystane w różnym zakresie dla napisania niniejszej pracy.

The subject of this thesis is the coat of arms of Queen Bona Sforza in Jagiellonian heraldry. In the sixteenth-century Sforzas coat of arms, which is the coat of arms of Queen Bona, wife of Sigismund I the Old, appears frequently in Jagiellon’s heraldry. Its presence is noticeable on stamps, coins, royal chancellery diplomas, medals, in sculpture and architectural tombstone, on artisanal handicraft, paintings and woodcuts and many other objects.The thesis was divided into four main chapters and subchapters.The first section describes the state of research on the person and the reign of Queen Bona. Literature relating in whole or in part to the person of Bona Sforza and nature of her reign in the Polish-Lithuanian state is listed in the chapter.Next chapter is devoted to a brief biography of Queen Bona Sforza d'Aragona, being an introduction to the essential part of the work.In the third chapter, the author summarizes the current state of research on the issue of the Sforza coat of arms in Jagiellonian heraldry, where he indicates a lack of development of this topic in the historical and history of art scientific literature.The last chapter presents the history of Sforza’s coat of arms, and particular subsections are devoted to identifying objects on which the crest is present and discusses the contents it carries.At the end of the thesis conclusions coming from the considerations made in the whole work are provided, e.g. concerning the place and role of the Sforza coat of arms in Jagiellonian heraldry and general outline of the contents and functions it serves.The work is closed by bibliographic note where sources and development used in varying degrees for the writing this paper are extracted.
