,,Sweeney Todd” by Stephen Sondheim in the context of the tradition of the American musical theater

Stephen Sondheim (ur. 1930) jest kompozytorem i autorem tekstów, twórcą kilkunastu musicali. W ciągu kilkudziesięciu lat pracy twórczej stał się czołowym przedstawicielem amerykańskiego teatru muzycznego. Sondheim zadebiutował w 1957 roku w Nowym Jorku jako autor tekstów słownych do musicalu West Side Story Leonarda Bernsteina. Jego najbardziej znanym i najczęściej wystawianym dziełem jest musical Sweeney Todd. Celem niniejszej pracy jest wypełnienie luki w polskim piśmiennictwie muzykologicznym dotyczącym współczesnego amerykańskiego teatru muzycznego i przybliżenie sylwetki Sondheima poprzez analizę wybranych aspektów musicalu Sweeney Todd.

Stephen Sondheim (born 1930) is a composer and lyricist, who wrote seventeen musicals. Since making his Broadway debut in 1957 as the writer of West Side Story lyrics, Sondheim has become one of the most acclaimed figures in American musical theatre. Sweeney Todd (1979) is not only the most famous work of, but it is also his greatest effort.The aim of this thesis is to acquaint the Polish reader with Sondheim’s work and contribute to filling a void that has existed concerning scholarly research and writing on the history of American musical theatre. At its centre stands the attempt to characterize composer’s output and analyse the musical aspects of Sweeney Todd, the musical.
