Zamieszkujący Przemyśl Polacy, Ukraińcy i Żydzi wznieśli tu swe domy i świątynie. Kryzys przyniosły XVII-wieczne klęski żywiołowe i wojny, zakończone upadkiem Rzeczypospolitej. Czynnikami ponownego rozwoju, z końcem XIX wieku stały się przemysł, kolejnictwo i austriacka twierdza, zniszczona podczas I wojny światowej.
The author has dealt with cultural function of Przemyśl, the medium-sized city (64 thous, inh.) situated in south-eastern Poland, near Ukrainian border. During 10th-14th cent. The city was disputed by Polish and Ruthenian states, and was included to Poland in 1340. Hence forth Przemyśl developed as a centre of trade, craft and culture. Poles, Jews and Ukrainians built their houses and temples. Prosperity was over in the mid-17th cent., due to elementary disasters and wars, ended by the fall of Poland in 1795. Factors of a redevelopment in the end of 19th cent. were: industrialization, railway lines and construction of huge Austrian Fortress, destroyed during the Great War. A liberal policy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire made possible to practize Polish culture, developed in independent Poland (1919-39). In the eve of 2nd World War, the city was divided along San river into German and Soviet sectors. In 1945 the new border separated Przemyśl from its eastern hinterland, Ukrainians were expelled to the USRR or to northern and western lands of Poland, Jews had been murdered By Nazis – thus the city has lost its multicultural character. After the fall of the USRR (in 1991) and that of Comunism in Poland (1989), the city entered connections with independent Ukraine and cultural activity of local Ukrainians became animated.A material base o Przemysl’s cultural function are its monuments (115 within a historic core) – churches, the Fortress remnants, and building dwelling museums, schools, libraries, cultural organizations, etc. Those old buildings are the basic tourist attraction of Przemyśl. The tourism is backed by local authorities, because of economic crisis of the city (industry, good transport), marked by a continuous depopulation. The discussed function contains sacral service (Przemyśl is an metropoly of the Roman-Catholic Church and the Byzantie-Ukrainian one) with the religious tourism, education (numerous secondary schools, the music one included, and 7 schools of the university level), cultural societies, some 40 yearly cultural; events and animated non-professional artistic activity.Interviewed by the author inhabitants of Przemyśl valuated the cultural function of their city positively in general. As regards an efficiency of the city material heritage protection, their opinions were different. The selfgovernment bodies have prepared detailed projects and spend a lot for their realization, using also the European Union funds. The author herself (also a citizen of Przemyśl) does hope that those actions, no doubt necessary, will be well prepared and realized.
