An Ethnolinguistic Analysis of Translation Strategies of Culture-Specific Items Based on Rio Anaconda Written by Wojciech Cejrowski

Tematem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest „Etnolingwistyczna analiza strategii transferu elementów kulturowych na podstawie utworu „Rio Anaconda” Wojciecha Cejrowskiego”. Praca ma na celu przedstawienie wybranych klasyfikacji strategii przekładowych, które mogą być pomocne w sytuacji transferu elementów kulturowych. Celem mojej pracy jest również zastosowanie niektórych strategii w przekładzie fragmentów powieści „Rio Anaconda” na język angielski, oraz zastanowienie się nad przyczynami i konsekwencjami wyboru danej strategii przekładowej.Niniejsza praca składa się z pięciu rozdziałów. Rozdział pierwszy prezentuje różne aspekty teoretyczne dotyczące elementów kulturowych w przekładzie, nieprzekładalności i obcości z nimi związanych czy elementów trzeciej kultury. Rozdział drugi przedstawia trzy klasyfikacje strategii tłumaczeniowych: Vinay’a i Darbelneta, Hervey’a i Higginsa oraz Javiera Franco Aixelá. W rozdziale trzecim przedstawiam postać Wojciecha Cejrowskiego, autora analizowanej przeze mnie powieści, oraz prezentuję samą powieść „Rio Anaconda”. Rozdział czwarty przedstawia narzędzia badawcze, które pomogły mi w analizie elementów kulturowych w wybranych fragmentach, a więc: etnolingwistyka, słowa klucze Anny Wierzbickiej oraz Językowy Obraz Świata, łączący w sobie elementy etnolingwistyki i semantyki. W rozdziale piątym prezentuję wybrane fragmenty powieści, zawierające elementy kulturowe oraz ich tłumaczenia na język angielski. Każdy fragment opatrzony jest stosownym komentarzem, w którym motywuję swój wybór strategii przekładowej. W zakończeniu przedstawiam wnioski płynące z przeprowadzonej przeze mnie analizy i wykonanego tłumaczenia oraz prezentuję ogólne podsumowanie całej pracy.Mam nadzieję, że niniejsza praca zachęci odbiorców do lektury powieści „Rio Anaconda”, a także skłoni do porównania zaproponowanych przeze mnie tłumaczeń fragmentów powieści z oficjalnym tłumaczeniem książki, gdy pojawi się ono na rynku wydawniczym.

The title of the present thesis is “An Ethnolinguistic Analysis of Translation Strategies of Culture-Specific Items Based on Rio Anaconda Written by Wojciech Cejrowski”. The aim of the thesis is to present selected classifications of translation strategies that may be helpful in transferring culture-specific items into the target text. Another aim of the thesis is to apply some of the presented strategies in the translation of particular passages from Rio Anaconda into English, as well as to consider the reasons and possible consequences of choosing a given translation strategy.The present thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter One discusses various theoretical aspects related to culture-specific items in translation, to untranslatability and foreignness. Chapter Two presents three translation strategies taxonomies. These are Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation procedures, Hervey and Higgins’ cultural transposition and Javier Franco Aixelá’s translation strategies. Chapter Three describes Wojciech Cejrowski, the author of Rio Anaconda, and the book itself. Chapter Four is a presentation of the methodological tools that I used to conduct the translation analysis. These are: Ethnolinguistics, the concept of Key Words by Anna Wierzbicka and the Linguistic Worldview that combines the elements of Ethnolinguistics and Semantics. Chapter Five constitutes the empirical part of my thesis in which I present selected passages including culture-specific items from Rio Anaconda and their translation into English. Each passage is accompanied by a comment in which I justify my choice of a particular translation strategy. In the final part of the thesis I draw conclusions resulting from the conducted analysis and I summarize the whole thesis.I hope that the present thesis will be an encouragement for readers to get acquainted with Rio Anaconda, and to compare the translation of the passages that I suggested with the possible future translation of the book.
