Between tradition and new interpretation. Death in Homer's Iliad and Alice Oswald's Memorial

Praca koncentruje się na porównaniu podejścia do tematu śmierci w Iliadzie Homera i Monumencie Alice Oswald. Głównym celem jest ukazanie, że Oswald eksploruje głębsze aspekty ludzkich emocji i przeżyć związanych z poległymi bohaterami niż w przypadku dzieła Homera. Śmierć pełni istotną rolę w Iliadzie, jednak przez całą dynamiczność i szybkość akcji, autor nie ma czasu, aby zatrzymać się i poświęcić moment poległym. W całym eposie występują wyjątki w postaci Patroklosa i Hektora, lecz spowodowane jest to ich powiązaniem z losem Achillesa. U Oswald każdy otrzymuje podobną ilość czasu i miejsce na stronach jej pracy, aby oddać szacunek zmarłym. W pracy na podstawie wybranych fragmentów zostaną poruszone takie wątki jak: żałoba, bardziej ludzkie spojrzenie na herosów homeryckich, rodzaje śmierci i jej bezsensowność występujące w Iliadzie. Wszystko po to, aby podkreślić innowacyjność podejścia Oswald do interpretacji i przekładu eposu Homera.

The paper focuses on comparing the approach to the theme of death in Homer's Iliad and Alice Oswald's Memorial. The main aim is to show that Oswald explores the deeper aspects of human emotion and the experiences of fallen heroes as opposed to Homer's work. Death plays an important role in the Iliad, but due to the dynamics and speed of the action, author does not have the time to stop and focus on the fallen. There are exceptions throughout the epic in the form of Patroclus and Hector, but this is due to their connection to the fate of Achilles. In Oswald's work, everyone is given a similar amount of time and space within the pages of her work to pay respect to the dead. Based on selected passages, the work will explore themes such as mourning, a more human view of Homeric heroes, the types of death and their senselessness found in the Iliad. All this is done in order to highlight the innovation of Oswald's approach to the interpretation and translation of Homer's epic.
