Heroi ponevoli (The Unwilling Hero) by Mikhai Tymoshenko and Kyrylo Horishnyi - comic adaptation of Ivan Franko's story

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza i porównanie z oryginałem powieści graficznej Bohater mimo woli (Герой поневолі), która jest komiksową adaptacją opowiadania Iwana Franki pod tym samym tytułem. Praca składa się z trzech części. Pierwszy z rozdziałów poświęcony jest ogólnym informacjom o komiksie (w tym także sytuacji komiksu na Ukrainie). Przedstawia metodologię i problemy badawcze związane z analizą komiksu. W kolejnym rozdziale zostało omówione tło historyczne utworu – Wiosna Ludów we Lwowie, która jest ważnym elementem fabuły, a także różnice między dwoma wariantami opowiadania Franki: polsko- i ukraińskojęzycznego. Trzeci, główny rozdział poświęcony jest analizie adaptacji komiksowej. Został podzielony on na cztery podrozdziały, omawiające po kolei główne elementy komiksu. Pierwszy z nich zajmuje się warstwą tekstową, drugi omawia fabułę, kolejny przedstawia bohaterów i ostatni opisuje szerzej miejsce wydarzeń. Zakończenie pracy stanowi próba określenia tego czy, i w jakim stopniu, adaptacja jest spójna i wierna oryginałowi.

The goal of this thesis is to analyze and compare the comic adaptation Unwilling Hero (Heroi ponevoli) with an Ivan Franko's story with the same title.The thesis consists of three parts. The first chapter is devoted to general information about the comic books (including the situation of the comic books in Ukraine). Describes research methodology and problems related to comic book analysis.The following chapter discusses the historical background of the story - Spring of Nations in Lviv, which is an important feature of the plot. It also analyze the differences between the two variants of Franko's story – one written in Polish and second in Ukrainian language.The third, main chapter is devoted to the analysis of comic adaptation. It was divided into four subsections, discussing the main elements of the comic book. The first one examine the text layer, the second discusses the storyline, the next one depicts the characters, and the last one describes the place of events. The purpose of the analysis is to determine if and to what extent adaptation is consistent and faithful to the original.
