Between Tradition and Innovation: Jan van Scorel and Portraiture in the Early Sixteenth-century Netherlands

This study examines portraits produced by the Netherlandish artist Janvan Scorel (1495-1562) and the pictorial, aesthetic and culturalsources from which they both emerged and departed. The main focus of analysis is Scorel's set of five extant group portraits depictingmembers of the Utrecht and Haarlem Brotherhoods of Jerusalem pilgrims(c. 1524-1541), works that are unique in Scorel's oeuvre and thatfurnished the template for his innovations and later portraiture.Considering equally technical aspects of manufacture and the socialdimension of function and reception, Scorel's portraits are shown toparticipate in vanguard concepts of art and humanism around 1500. Hisexposure to these concepts and to the portraits of leading artistsacross Europe as a result of extensive travels is incorporated intothe discussion. In this manner, Scorel introduced subtle innovationsfrom diverse sources into the portrait genre as it was practiced inthe Netherlands.
