My Europe. The Europe from the Andrzej Stasiuk's writing in the context of the myth of Central Europe

Praca jest próbą odczytania Europy jaka wyłania się z twórczości Andrzeja Stasiuka – polskiego pisarza, poety, publicysty, dramaturga - poprzez mit Europy Środkowej. Mit w jego wymiarze współczesnym jest kategorią w szczególności przydatną w interpretowaniu idei Europy Środkowej, która w postaci ożywionej przez Milana Kunderę, a także innych środkowoeuropejskich intelektualistów w latach 80' i późniejszych, oscyluje pomiędzy mitem właśnie a rzeczywistością. Wskazują na to problemy definicyjne Europy Środkowej w każdym jej wymiarze od geograficznego, przez polityczny po społeczno – kulturowy i skłonność do umieszczania jej w mitycznym królestwie ducha. Praca wskazuje na najważniejsze komponenty mitu środkowoeuropejskiego, co do których istnieje ogólna zgoda badaczy. Jest to więc dziedzictwo geopolitycznego wymiaru idei Europy Środkowej – Mitteleuropy. Podstawą mitu jest dziedzictwo historyczno – kulturowe wyrosłe w ciągu dziejów na osi Wschód – Zachód. Śledząc koleje losu centralnego regionu Europy od starożytności do nowożytności, praca pokazuje w jaki sposób konkretne wydarzenia i procesy historyczne wpłynęły na wykształtowanie się typowego środkowoeuropejskiego poczucia bycia pomiędzy, bycia pograniczem, bycia pomostem, bycia zaporą. Kolejnym odniesieniem w nakreślaniu charakteru mitu środkowoeuropejskiego jest dziedzictwo Monarchii habsburskiej i komunizmu. W ten sposób zarysowany mit środkowoeuropejski jest odniesieniem dla wizji Europy wyłaniającej się z twórczości Stasiuka. Niezaprzeczalnym jest bowiem, że Stasiuk zabiera głos w dyskusji o Europie Środkowej. Andrzej Stasiuk nie nadużywa pojęcia Europa Środkowa. Bierze je wręcz w cudzysłów. Termin ten zaledwie kilka razy pojawił się na kartkach książek pisarza. Za to woli Stasiuk mówić o swojej Europie. Europie z podróżowania, codziennego przebywania z jej mieszkańcami, w jej przestrzeniach. Europie pełnej sprzeczności, skrajności i paradoksów wynikających z historii i zagubienia w czasoprzestrzeni. Europie pomiędzy Niemcami a Rosją, pomiędzy Zachodem i Wschodem. Europie zanikającej, którą ocalić może tylko pamięć.

The work is an attempt to interprate the Europe which emerges from the Andrzej Stasiuk's writings - the Polish writer, poet, publicist, dramatist - through the myth of Central Europe. The myth in its contemporary dimension is particularly useful in reading the idea of Central Europe, which in the shape formed by Milan Kundera, and other Central European intellectuals in the '80s and later, is just exactly somewhere between the myth and reality. It is visible by the problems of definition of Central Europe in each of its dimensions, the geographical, the political and social – cultural one and the tendency to put it in the mythical kingdom of the spirit. Work points to the crucial components of the Central European myth, on which there is a general consensus within researchers. It is a heritage of the geopolitical dimension of the idea of ​​Central Europe - Mitteleuropa. The basis of the myth is the historical - cultural heritage which sprung up in the course of history between East and West. By tracking the history of the central region of Europe from ancient to modern times, the work shows how the specific historical events and processes have influenced on the typical Central European sense of being in between, being a borderland, being a bridge, to be a barrage. Another reference in framing the nature of the Central European myth is Habsburg Monarchy and communism period. In this way the outlined myth of the Central Europe is a reference to the vision of a Europe emerging from the Stasiuk's writings. The undeniable fact is that Stasiuk takes part in discussions about the Central Europe. His thought can be located in the mainstream of the Central European myth, but often he creates its own twists and turns in new directions, the less obvious and surprising, or just another cutting themselves off from the main course of the discussion. Andrzej Stasiuk does not abuse the term of the Central Europe. He takes it even in quotation marks. The term only a few times appeared in his books. Stasiuk prefers to talk about 'his own Europe'. This is the Europe from traveling and meeting hers people, in her space. The Europe, full of contradictions, of extremes and paradoxes arising from the history and loss in spacetime. The Europe between Germany and Russia, between West and East. The disappearing Europe which can be save only by remembering.
