Relationship between the content of selected nutrients in human breast milk and the temperament of an infant in the first year of life

Nieliczne badania wskazują, że karmienie piersią i odpowiedni skład mleka kobiecego nie tylko wspiera rozwój psychiczny dziecka, ale także wpływać może pozytywnie na jego temperament. Temperament jest zbiorem zachowań i reakcji w odpowiedzi na różne sytuacje życiowe. W jego ocenie wyróżnia się trzy wymiary: Negatywną Afektywność, Ekstrawersję/Surgencję oraz Orientację/Regulację.Kobiece mleko jest złożonym płynem biologicznym w skład, którego poza wodą wchodzą składniki odżywcze - tłuszcze, białka i węglowodany oraz cały szereg nieodżywczych składników bioaktywnych. Skład mleka ludzkiego zmienia się dynamicznie w trakcie laktacji a na jego zmienność wpływają zarówno czynniki matczyne jak i środowiskowe. Celem pracy było zbadanie zależności między wybranymi składnikami odżywczymi mleka matki, a temperamentem dziecka z uwzględnieniem czynników zakłócających, takich jak depresja, płeć i wiek dziecka oraz temperament matki.W badaniu wzięło udział 149 matek wraz z niemowlętami w wieku około 5 miesięcy, zamieszkujących we Wrocławiu. Do określenia temperamentu niemowlęcia użyto Zrewidowanego Kwestionariusza Zachowań Niemowlęcych (IBQ-R) autorstwa Gartstein i Rothbart (2003), który wypełniały matki. Skład mleka oraz zawartość kortyzolu określono na podstawie pojedynczej próbki mleka pobranej od matki, odpowiednio metodą analizy w podczerwieni oraz metodą immunoenzymatyczną. Aby zbadać, czy istnieje zależność między składnikami odżywczymi mleka a temperamentem niemowląt wykonano analizę korelacji oraz analizę regresji liniowej.W badaniu nie wykazano zależności pomiędzy składnikami odżywczymi mleka, a temperamentem niemowląt. Wykazano natomiast zależności pomiędzy Negatywną Afektywnością dziecka i liczbą karmień oraz jego Orientacją/Regulacją i czasem pojedynczego karmienia i czasem łącznym karmień. Wymiary temperamentu dziecka związane były również z niektórymi cechami temperamentu matki w tym wrażliwością sensoryczną oraz rytmicznością. Temperament i skład mleka produkowanego przez matki dziewczynek i chłopców nie różnił się istotnie.Pomimo, zaobserwowanego braku związku składu mleka kobiecego z temperamentem niemowląt badanie dostarczyło istotnych informacji na temat związku temperamentu z karmieniem piersią.

Few studies show that breastfeeding and the appropriate composition of breast milk not only supports the psychological development of a child but can also positively affect temperament. Temperament is a set of behaviors and reactions in response to various life situations. In assessing the temperament, three dimensions can be distinguished: Negative Affectivity, Extraversion/Surgency and Orientation/Regulation.Breast milk is a complex biological fluid that besides of water includes, nutrients - fats, proteins and carbohydrates, and a whole host of non-nutritive bioactive components. The composition of human milk changes dynamically during lactation and its variability is influenced by both maternal and environmental factors.The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between selected nutrients of breast milk and child temperament, considering confounding factors such as depression, child sex and age, and maternal temperament.The study involved 149 mothers with babies aged about 5 months, living in Wrocław. The Infant Behavior Questionnaire – Revised version (IBQ-R) by Gartstein and Rothbart (2003) completed by mothers, was used to determine infant temperament. Milk composition and the level of milk cortisol were determined based on a single milk sample, using the infrared analysis and the enzyme immunoassay, respectively. To investigate whether there was a relationship between the nutrients of milk and the temperament of infants, correlation analysis and linear regression analysis were performed.The study found no association between milk composition and infant temperament. However, the associations between infant Negative Affectivity and the number of feedings as well as Orientation/Regulation and time of a single feeding and the total time of feeding were shown. The dimensions of the child's temperament were also related to some traits of maternal temperament, including sensory sensitivity and rhythmicity. Neither infant temperament nor milk composition differed significantly depending on infant sex.Despite the observed lack of association between the composition of human milk and infant temperament, the study provided significant information on the relationship between temperament and breastfeeding.
