Decolonization in (curatorial) practice on the example of the British Museum – an analysis of selected interventions

Praca stanowi prezentację dwóch wybranych interwencyjnych praktyk kuratorskich w przestrzeni British Museum: The Uncomfortable Art Tours autorstwa Alice Procter oraz The Unfiltered History Tour, inicjatywy VICE Media. W oparciu o krytyczne teorie zaproponowane przez Mary Louise Pratt, Jamesa Clifforda, Waltera Mignolo oraz Aníbala Quijano analizuje, interpretuje oraz bada potencjał dekolonialny obu projektów. Celem pracy jest ukazanie jak strategie kuratorskie wpływają na postrzeganie historii kolonializmu oraz w jaki sposób mogą umożliwić konfrontację z trudnym dziedzictwem.

The work presents two selected interventional curatorial practices in the British Museum: The Uncomfortable Art Tours by Alice Procter and The Unfiltered History Tour, an initiative of VICE Media. Based on critical theories proposed by Mary Louise Pratt, James Clifford, Walter Mignolo and Aníbal Quijano it analyses, interprets and explores the decolonial potential of both projects.The aim of this paper is to show how curatorial strategies influence the perception of the history of colonialism and how they can make confronting with a difficult legacy possible.
