Gods and Men. A Conflict in Euripides' "Hippolytus".

Praca jest próbą interpretacji tragedii Eurypidesa Hippolit uwieńczony w kluczu widocznego w niej konfliktu postaw i wartości, rozgrywającego się w świecie ludzi i w świecie bogów. Analizuję w tym celu strukturę tragedii, relacje łączące te dwa światy, ich wzajemne przenikanie się i oddziaływanie na siebie oraz naturę konfliktu rozgrywającego się w tych dwóch światach i na ich granicy. Analiza ta prowadzi do opisania konfliktu w kategorii dwóch rodzajów pobożności, a w konsekwencji do wskazania jego właściwego źródła. Umieszczenie dyskusji w szerszym kontekście kulturowym i ideowym Grecji V w. pozwala lepiej zrozumieć ten konflikt i dostrzec jego obecność w rzeczywistym świecie.

This thesis is an interpretation of Euripides’ Hippolytus in the light of a conflict between attitudes and values, inherent in the tragedy, engaging the world both human and divine. For this purpose, I analyze the structure of the tragedy, the relationships between the two worlds, their mutual interactions and, finally, the nature of the conflict taking place in these two worlds and at their intersection. This analysis leads to a description of the conflict in question in terms of two kinds of piety and, consequently, to the identification of its primary source. The indication of a wider cultural and ideological context of 5th century Greece enables one better to understand this conflict and to discover its presence in the real world.
